Okay completely in the deep end here.
Basically can/more or less have got my hands on a Ford Popular, totally standard not even got any parts for it to be on a strip....yet. But as they are a popular (excuse the pun) car for a drag strip I wouldn't of though it'd be that hard to get hold of parts. I've got a mate in the know how so he;ll help as and when, but wondering if anyone knows any good websites to follow i.e engines/transmission etc? As I really need to start knowing about car mechanics etc.
I've got an Idea of what I want in my head but just getting across to paper then actually doing it. For example paint will be last on my list (nothing special just re done in original back colour, gears would prefer to go 'rally style' so all I have to do is push forward and backward my thoughts t'd be easier in that respect?

sounds interesting, look forward to the project thread. I would love to do something like this and learn mechanics but not sure I have the time, money or willpower to see something like this through.

You'll be looking at lots of money to do it!
Road legal? will up the costs if not then trailer and car to tow.
Unless you know people then i wouldn't bother with a 1/4 mile car.
Rally style is sequential and hundreds if not thousands for one of those for example a sequential box for my car 10k.
You are a bit of a dreamer nathy with some of the stuff you say you want to do. If you want to know mech then get a spairs repair jobby and fix that up.
You cant even pay 2quid for a photoshop let alone building a 'drag' car to any spec.
But it all depends do it on the cheap like Jed but uses a cheaper base or go crazy like bigron that will take you umpteen years to build.

@VRS, Yes I can see where you're coming from with the 'dreamer' comment, but I have been longing to do this for so long. Probably not road legal, so would be on a trailer. I had a feeling that'd it would be within that range for that sort of gearbox setup, which is unfortunate but we'll see. I don't want a 'spares and repairs' car I want to do a drag car hence why I asked about it, not a do-up & sell on, or are you saying so I can get experience at the same time?

Im saying learn the basics first etc so you know the mechanics.
I cant see you making a decent let alone a 'fast' car. I think its something you should consider hard before wasting money on it as i dont think you'll be able to sell it for much once finished.
If you want to do something like that get an old ford etc and track it.

Not clued up on this at all, but seems the popular choice over here is Firebirds and old Escorts, that sort of thing. Looking at yours it just doesn't strike me as a drag car at all, so just surprised.
What ever you choose, this is bound to be an expensive hobby. But then again, we all need at least one of those.
As Seth, think it would be a cool project to follow.

I think its just a massive waste of time and money.
Your going to need a engine conversion and unless you have the time, knowledge resources or money then its pointless from the outset.
Some people use a cossie floor pan to run 4x4 so yes expensive!

Easiest thing to do is get a stonking massive V8, whack a massive super charger or turbo to it, massive rear tyres, auto transmission and stiff suspension.
All of which would cost a lot of money

Ok, first of all, the crappy side valve engine won't cut it, you need a v8.
Rover v8 I the obvious choice
You'll then need a gearbox and a rear axle capable f handling more than 34bhp.
When you've done that, the rover engine will only make 160bhp and it'll be boring so you'll want more power.
Can you weld?

PPS, get in touch with Pete Bates, (All Torque) off here, pictures of drag cars all round his house, and IIRC his old man had / still has a drag racer. Robin might know more.

Ford Pops are used for drag. The class is known as "Funny cars"

Rover v8 with different cams carbs header and nos tubbed rear end with hoosier drag tyres auto box big taco and away you go could be done for less than 5-7k if sources second hand etc
