I've a mate who runs a 1.4 16v engine at 190bhp in a MK2 Escort rally car. Can't for the life of me figure out how he does it!

i know of some one with a 1.4 16v in a nova thats 190bhp on carbs. idles at 2500rpm rev limit is 12000rpm, not a road car! all depends how much you want to spend! bmw used to get over 1000bhp out of a 1.4 for racing, turbo'd.

To make it easy to live with, a shorter inlet manifol, 4 branch, with a full system, ARP rod bolts and raise the rev limt. Should make it pretty nippy, and won't cost too much.

Just go for a 1.6/1.8/20XE. Yeah a high powered 1.4 will be unique but you'll never be as quick as a C20LET in reality whilst spending thousands more.

I don't fancy xe reddy had a bad experience with one not to mention a lot of money down the drain, but maybe it was bad luck I suppose a 1.6 gsi with cams,4-2-1 straight through,vx inlet/bodies could see decent bhp figure aswell as being more reliable possibly

Giving I understand this mess correctly, is yours not a 1.6 and not a 1.4 then?

You really should consider using the two buttons to the right of the M on your keyboard.

A 1.6 with tb's etc will cost a damn sight more than an XE! You could probably buy one and rebuild it for less!

dont bother with a 1.4.... if you really want small block use the 1600 or even the 1800 (is it 'small')

Its a no brainer really.... spend 1000's to get c20xe power or fit a c20xe for <1000 and spend the saved cash getting that to 180-200bhp

More torque.... but more weight :S

Money no object i'd build a screamer c/x16xe and fire it into a Caterfield and go racing in a 1600cc NA class

You want reliable? Don't mess with it then. Easy.

Engine mods are never done with reliability as the main goal.

that is the worst reason ever for justifying spending a lot of money on something that could be done a lot cheaper and better.
