Well it's about time I sorted my daily driver out I use to get to and from work. I'll be selling my Astra van next week, the one with the drama of the Auto Electrician using it for himself only just got this back after 10 weeks BTW anyway that money is going in the savings.
Not long after I'll be selling the RB5 as it's too old, 20mpg, and the fact it's not the nicest thing to get into first thing in the morning
Basically i'm after something that does 25+mpg when i'm pootling around but will come alive when i want to play. I'm imaging fitting an ipod dock and being able to hear it over the car ie not like a scooby. It also needs to be slightly bigger than say a 182.
I was going to get either a Mazda 3 MPS, Astra VXR, Focus ST, Megane r26 F1 team but don't want to spend that much now as decent examples are circa 7K
My list as it stands...
Civic Type R
Pros- Decent mpg when not caining it, reliable if looked after, i like the looks and driving position. Can get a good one for 3K.
Cons- Getting on a bit now? Constant chasing the revs to get anywhere might become tiresome.
Example
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/honda/civic-type-r/honda-civic-mk6-type-r-2003/862959
Fabia VRS
Pros- I've had one before and really liked it. 50mpg. I can remap it and play with it easily to make it the car it should have been. Easy to sell on
Cons- I've had one before and sold it because i got bored i don't have that luxery anymore though so it would have to stay for a while. I'd need to spend a bit more to get a nice example.
Example

Clio 197
Pros- REALLY good to drive. Same MPG and driving style of the CTR. Good equipment as standard
Cons- Same as CTR really regarding revving the nuts off etc. Cost ie 5.5/6K minimum max budget
Example
Could get this for 5.5K
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/renault/renaultsport-clio/renaultsport-clio-2007-reduced-quick-sale/859993
So many other cars have gone through my head but most just bore me even thinking about them
Any input from you fellas?

Also excluded BMW/Audi due to parts costs if it breaks otherwise a 330i Msport would be well up there.

On a trip down to Drayton Manor yesterday my TT (1.8T same as the Leon) averaged 37 mpg.
Assuming the trip computer is a little optimistic that has still got to be 30+ mpg

That's good Ian! Thing is I'll be 90% town driving so that would easy be 25mpg? Was trying to avoid a turbocharged petrol car TBH but it might be a mental thing

TBH it's a bit shit around town
I work in Warrington though so it suits me as 90% of my journeys are motorway.

LCR. Brilliant everyday car. Practical, child friendly, good mpg, with a simple map it can be very quick if you want a blast and I think there superb looking.

The lowest I've seen on the trip comp about town is 29mpg. That's pretty decent for a 270bhp car lol.

If I was close I'd let you have mine for the day providing you get me a £4k deposit in case you wrote it off
I filled the tank on mine and drove all the way to London sitting at 75mph on the cruise control and got there with quarter a tank left. I averaged 38mpg.
About town you'll get well over 300 miles mixed driving.

Good guess, £70 on the nose.
Parts are pretty cheap as well as its the mk4 golf floor plan.

Don't get a 197 if you want mpg I average 21 that's normally day to day driving aswell. Did 30 mpg on a 300 miles round trip.
