Should have got an Android to start with!
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

The iOS app is supposed to be better than Androids current implementation.

Why is it necessary to ruin a thread by the second reply? I predict 14 pages of bickering now, where's Steve too?

I think he's lost in the Australian outback because he's been secretly using Apple maps.

Be lost without google maps. Ideal for my job just to check if there are any obstructions that a map won't show you (tight turns, low bridges, narrow roads etc)

How do you check all that? Do you street view the entire journey?

Basically around where I need to be. Put the address in, then have it so it shows the road with an ariel image and what looks tight or any bridges just go to street view and check. Basically track back to the motorway junction or junction off a main arterial route.
Afterall its no fun trying to do a 3 point turn in a fully laden 44 tonne truck at rush hour!

Its an interesting outcome. Apple got some right stick from dropping Google Maps but the outcome they wanted has happened in a round-about way. They got the directions in google maps etc. they have ended up with at the moment an app better on iOS than the Android from the comments I have seen.

Clearly not intentional though
And they can't drop iMaps otherwise they're back at square one; so they're now stuck with pedaling an inferior (Google are too far ahead in the game tbh) product that no one now really wants at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars in acquisitions and development costs.

Tbf, i can think of a handful of others on here that would be way ahead of Rob
Either way it'll be interesting to see what Apple do as they've seriously shot themselves in the foot letting Google back in whilst they've been farting around.

Simple question John :
Are the options out there to users better now than it was 6 months ago around Maps/Navigation on IOS?
The answer obviously is yes so to the end user its all good.
Obviously Apple would have preferred to avoid it as it will have cost then a bucket load of $$$ in sales and PR. I didn't say Apple planned it to happen this way just that in a round-a-bout way its ended up that way.

Rob, I think you're forgetting that some potential buyers will still be put off by the fact that the bundled app isn't up to scratch.
Having to download new apps to replace the regular once used to be one of the downfalls of Android and now you claim this is actually benefitting iOS!?
On Android at least you could set a third party app to be standard. On iOS you'll never be able to click on an address and have it open in Google Maps.
I like the new Google Maps and it's a fantastic backup for looking for POI's, but in no way does it completely undo what Apple did by replacing it in the first place.

True - not having the default to Google Maps from Apple Apps is a pain, I think Google have an API now so non-Apple apps can default to using it which is good.
As I said they will have lost $$$ from this, its far from the ideal solution but IMO a better place than before the whole split as your now getting built in Nav which was not there (which I found to be OK, but the maps were lacking. Also don't like the traffic system at all) and I am sure Google Maps will be one of the first downloads most people make. A better Map app than was built in previously
I hadn't realized that Androids downfall was the lack of built in apps (but then I have only used other peoples never a brand new one). I always presumed it was had more out of the box than iOS with all the Google apps etc there.
