My mates just bought one if these last night and is a bit concerned about something lol. The car runs as it should and is pretty quick but when he gives it a bootful it smokes VERY badly. It's been decatted with an after market exhaust which won't help I guess. It's also on 136k miles. Just driving about normally its smokes no more than any other diesel, its only bad when he guns it.

Any suggestions???

If its been mapped that could explain it if it's black smoke.

It's standard as far as he knows. The cars had a few £££ spent on it by the looks of things. Coilovers, angel eye headlight conversion plus a few other bits and bobs.

Well our diesel QashQai mostly gets driven about 3-4 miles a day in town and after a while smokes really bad. A good run on the Mway clears it right up

The swirl flaps are a known problem and a relatively easy fix. They can basically break off and drop into the engine causing..well..£££££££

He uses it on the motorway so it gets a good run. I'll let him know about the swirl flaps tho. Is there a down side to taking them off???

Swirl flaps are a problem yer. They can cause a smokey car on full throttle. If they go very badly they corrode and fall off and drop into your engine. Very common problem. Easy fix bout 2 hora work ish depending on how good you are with a spanner

Oh and there's no downside to removing them just get the blanks and it will be fine

Next edit the smoke could be down to shitty injectors. Very common problem on the older shaped bmw's. can get new ones or get them reconned

My mate is breaking his E46 330D because he never took his out. One decided it didn't want to live in the inlet manifold and decided to exit through engine...

Yep as Flaffy said, because it's a common problem you can buy the blanks and they are a DIY job. No adverse effects.

Not 100% sure but if they have an EGR valve get him to clean that out or replace and also the throttle body.

Yer thats anorher thing corsa nut. If your takeing your inlet manifold off to do the flaps. Clear out the egr aswell as clearing out the inlet manifold all at the same time. Gets full of shit. A lot of people take the inlet and the egr valve and soak it I'm caustic soda over night. Best thing to do apparently.

Smokey... Check for a split boost hose or leaking cooler first mate.

As said blank swirl flaps it's a no brainer really.

Friend runs a mapped one (very aggressive map) on a 3 inch turbo back, k&n panel, allard egr delete and mapped out. And it doesn't excessively smoke.

Run 3 cats standard system you shouldn't see much smoke if any.

Also change the PCV filter in the top of the rocker cover the old non serviceable items kill turbos! Get the one Witt he replaceable insert and replace the filter every time you do an oil change.

Ok just been out a run in this and it's deffo not running 100%. It's sounds the way it should and drives ok about the town but its very slow for a big CC diesel. It's very smoky when you boot it (jet black smoke). I was expecting it to pin me the seat when it came on boost but nope. My diesel fiesta has more pull than it. He's hoping its not an expensive fix.

sounds like 1 or more of the injectors has gone down fella, black smoke, not very powerful, does it sound overly loud when revved?

had this on a Vectra C CDTI and it had lunched 3 of the 4 injectors, had them refurbed at £100 each and the thing flew when it came back.

The turbos fine afaik. It sounds like a big CC petrol engine, nothing like a diesel anyways, not to sure how its suppose to sound lol.

He's gonna have it checked over soon to see what the problems are.

I'd send the injectors off for testing. Sounds like one or more is out. If not then the turbo will be on the way out
