I've read £60 fine, but also read of £200+ in some areas.

£60 fine OR told to change them with a stamp from an mot approved garage which you have to show to the local cop shop. If its a private plate then they can write to the dvla and have the plate taken off you. That's very harsh tho and its not happened to me and I was stopped 4 times in 2 months a few years ago lol.

Can those ANPR cameras that sit at the side of the road pick up that its illegally spaced?

£60 per plate is max. Got done for my pressed plates not long ago.

No, that's why they're illegal, because the ANPR cameras can't read them

Ignore it I suppose, you would only get caught if the camera was in a police car and you were pulled over

Edit: Just looked it up, apparently if it can't read it then it takes a photo and saves it so it can be manually entered, whether that can get you in trouble or not I don't know

My mum had a dodgy plate for 4 years and never had a problem with ANPR, got pulled over once though and fined £60

Hmm not sure what to do,plate looks alright spaced normally but mint if spaced illegally and only people who are into there vauxhalls would know what it means but a normal person wouldn't have a clue.Don't ask im not telling

If i get pulled for the plates im sure they will have my pants down for my tints too

If its a private plate, the DVLA can take it off you apparently.

If you don't want to attract attention to your car, have normal spaced plates and its one less reason to have your car stopped.

They can take private plates off you but the officer said to me he wouldn't as its a shit load of paperwork.

I've had illegal plates since I was 18
Only been pulled up once and told to change them. No fines , prohibitions etc.
touch wood I don't get pulled tomorrow lol

It's upto the officer at the time. I've never been told to change mine, just straight to a fine every time

I was caught by the same copper 3 times in less than 6 weeks

Leave them legal mark but get some made up with the imcorrect spacing for shows/meets etc

The funny/lucky thing was the copper that gave me all the grief done a full check over on the car (Corsa at the time) and checked the engine number etc. He then looked at the documents I had and gave me the all clear. Little did he realise I had a 2ltr XE fitted that he was leaning on and not the 1.6ltr that was in the paperwork

Nope. I had a small front plate on my old B years ago, and was stopped about 4/5 time and told to change it, but never given any paper work so never bothered.

As with the private plate, I had a cap at bottom of a 1 to make it look an L. Stopped and given £60 fine. No warnings etc. also have me a thing to go get stamped at MOT place to prove I'd had it changed.

I got pulled over couple of years ago (for something else), and my numberplate was as per photo below, (you can tell the T is not spaced legally) and got told to change them otherwise it's a £60 fine. Halfords originally done those plates, so I went straight to them told them about the police pulling me over for them and showed them a slip they done it free of charge.

i made a set of cut down plates with illegal spacing for a mate for his bmw 5 series and the police officer that pulled him just laughed as he removed them and placed them in an evidence bag to be reported to the dvla to consider further action or to take his plate off him lol

For the record, its not just private plates that can be taken off you, they can also take normal plates off you. End of the day, they all belong to the DVLA, and are just normal registration plates. Just some are personal to the car owner, but its still a normal plate.

Ive only been stopped twice for plates. Once when i had pressed plates on my E36. Got let off because he was doing me for something else at the time, and told me he would let me off with the plates, but get them changed.

2nd was in the Pulsar. Front plate was tiny so got told to change it. Rear plate was a normal import plate with import digits. Couldn't physically fit anything else in the space with legal size digits and spacing. Took a trip up to the HQ in Glenrothes to explain the situation and 1 of the higher up traffic officers came out and had a look. Seen where i was coming from and agree'd with what i was saying. Told me if i get stopped again for it, take the fine, then bring up to the HQ and they would deal with it.

i thought imports size and font was acceptable as long as its on a genuine import with the smaller number plate recess?
