I filled the fiesta up with £30 worth of diesel today and noticed that the needle didn't go up as far as I thought if would. I had a look at the price board on the way out and fuck me diesel is expensive now, £1.44 a ltr compared to £1.32 for standard unleaded. Even the momentum99 is cheaper at £1.36. Is it even worth buying a diesel car now

not if you use your diesel to take the kids to school and go shopping once a week.
you'll still see a saving though, dependent on the mileage you do.

I use mine purely to get to work and back all week. No more than 9k miles a year.

Depends what you buy.
There's still a break-even point where the additional mileage offsets the additional price, its just further away than if they cost the same.
As posted, not worth it for a few thousand a year. Particularly as the cars are generally more expensive as well.
Do think you'd struggle to beat some of the newer diesels though, guy who we sell stuff to from Scotland comes down in one, reckons on 70mpg motorway in a Passat, can't think of any petrol saloon that would get close to that.

My dad has one of the Bluemotion Passats, doesn't drive it economically at all but still gets mid 50's on average, no way a petrol can do anything like that. If you are racking miles up that makes a real difference.

Fiesta 1.6 tdci here and it sounds fine, costs less to get to work than a petrol car, doesnt stink, drives fine.
£1.40 a litre at asda.
£20 takes the needle to the halfway mark as well.

New contracts manager at work has his own 318i Tourer. 60 plate roughly. He sees 50mpg on the motorway when sitting at a steady 70-80mph.
He said with the mileage he does, plus the extra cost of diesel and the cost of the comparable 318d, and he said it made more financial sense to buy the petrol.
If you can pick up a decent, modern petrol and do sub 15k a year, you're better of with that.
1.8T (petrol) Audi A5 costs less to tax than my 1.4 Fiesta ffs.

I spend £150p/m on petrol in my Fiesta and it gets me about 1000 miles.
I reckon the price difference of diesel vs. MPG gains and I wouldn't see much of a saving.

Do people ever take into account the extra money the diesel is worth when you sell it on. For driving to work and something to use daily, unless you are minted, can't beat a diesel. Normally is quicker and if not feels quicker than an equivalently sized n/a petrol.

That's what mine is, goes well but the fact that standard unleaded is 10p a ltr cheaper than diesel is it worth paying the extra.

My two pence is a lot of people forget two factors. First is the claimed mpg factors from manafacturers are performed in ridiculous non real world scenarios (bit like mobile batteries) so the quoted mpg is vastly exaggerated (Not always the case but more common than not)
Secondly is nobody wants to buy anything other bigger than a Clio with a petrol engine so it's naturally worth 5pence after "saving" £xxxx buying one. It's a false economy in most cases sadly.

exactly. My diesel sounds like one on tick over then sounds a bit like a petrol when you nail it. Doesn't particularly smell, faster than a lot of petrol cars as well. I'd not go back to a petrol daily unless I was minted. Think diesel was 137.7p in asda today here.
