wierd wierd stuff
from what i can make out it seems to be a water soluble film that they soak untill it starts going see through then dip what ever you want into it and it sticks

some pritty cool things on youtube about it

Yeah used to watch some American Chopper program and they did a Camo version (iirc) looked awesome.

Surely it looks nothing like carbon? Isn't it just black and silver checkers like any cheap old plastic part with "carbon look"?

I remember I got the Irmscher carbon interior parts for my Corsa B, but couldn't get my self to fit them as they just looked so shit with that horrible pattern.

Fairly certain it has been used on car parts for decades.

Stuff like imitated wood etc. is likely done this way. It's a pretty straight forward method of printing patterns on complex surfaces.
