Hello , i'm going to view a car on Saturday , its a corsa c 75k 51 plate , i know the person selling it as i was friends with him at school but haven't really seen much of each other since.

But this is my problem he wants £1150 for it which I think is a fair price? , I know he brought the car to fix up and make a profit as well (its just had timing chain and water pump replaced)

I only have £1000 though , so I want to try and get it for a grand , so i don't need to borrow money.

The car is exactly what i'm looking for and its local so i don't want to let it slip , providing its a good motor.

So the advice I need is : should I just tell him my situation and offer him a grand straight away? , or start lower and work my way up? , It just makes it difficult to try and knock him down as I know him so i can't be a nob when haggling

Thanks for any suggestions in advance

TBH I'd imagine he's priced it so he gets £1k minimum for it. Point out a few niggles when viewing it and just say 'I've got £1k cash on me today, would you take that?'

Take £1,000 in cash to show him and tell him you'll take it that day, for £150 it should work

That's good thinking , i never thought of bringing the cash with me as he lives about 5 miles away so could of just dropped the money whenever.

I also thought it would be priced so he could get a grand , but £150 is going to be £150 profit to him.

To answer your question go with your grand. Pick a few holes, offer him the grand and see what he does. If he is buying to sell it and make a profit then he won't be too attached and will want to get his hands on the money.

when i brought my corsa b it was 9 years old with 59k on the clock and it only cost £1050 , but from looking around a 51 plate with 75k for £1150 is still a good deal lol

i'm trying to work out how much profit he would want though? , I don't know how much he paid for it in the first place and timing chain , water pump , coolant would be £100-£150ish ? , plus 4 or so hours of his labour ? so im just hoping he picked up the car dirt cheap so he is still happy with the profit his making on a grand

No offence but you're somewhat overthinking it!

As Tom says, insult him first, offer him £900, if he takes it, happy days, if not then just say, look it needs X, Y, Z doing, I've got £1k cash right here, right now, yay / nay?

Don't be botherd about his profit. If it needed that work he will have paid peanuts for it and will no doubt be making enough cash to take £1k for it.

Buyers always low ball
Sellers always high ball
Don't worry. He's not going to shoot you for making a low offer
He says 1150
You say 900
He says 1100
You say 950
He says £1000
You say yes

Take it for a test drive without him then pull a fuse, instant fault, instant haggling point. Get some money off pop fuse back in on way home
Is start at 900 which ever way you do it. And stand your ground, don't back down on his first re-offer

Tell him I sold a 1.4 04 facelift Sri for a grand last September, he's havin your pants down and you're frankly quite insulted. Wave £500 at him and ask when you get to have a go on his sister for being so generous.
But really, just offer a grand and be done with it.
