I remember when these came out and pretty much forgot about them until this one popped up on my regular AutoTrader local search.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201304026050577?atmobcid=soc3

I think they were slated a bit when released but I think they look pretty smart and judging by this vid seem to be quite capable

Probably get that one for £1800? Still a birds car though?

I suppose a 182 would be a better car but you won't find an 04 plate with 50k for £1800.

Might go an blag a test drive so I can say I've driven one he's not far away

From what I've heard, in a straight line theres pretty much no difference in it between a 138 and a 180.
I've gotta 138 but never been in a 180. Had a play with a 206 a few weeks ago and they couldn't overtake me so may have been another 138.

They are super cheap.
I like them, crazy how cheap you can pick one up.
Engines are strong too, easily handle 300bhp + boosted with out even opening them up, if that's your thing.

Yeah not reading good things on the MPG front

Also very tall gearing and funny driving position? Worth a look though

Beautiful car IMO. There was one local, toally standard but slightly lowered (read sensible not internet lowered) and polished standard wheels.

Proper nice. Interior is lovely too.

Cant see how a car with 50bhp more is the same speed as one with 50bhp less?

Think it's down to the gearing James? They really need to be revved for the VVT to kick in so maybe the standard car is better suited to normal driving.

Gonna ring him later.

Tbh they are alot of car for the money. Always liked them and always said i would have 1 over an RS Clio if i were to pick between the 2.

Seats are awesome but the driving position takes some getting used to. The seats are high up and you need to stretch to reach the steering wheel.

They aren't slow either. iirc they have more torque than the RS Clio and EP3.

The only difference in gearing on a 180 and a 138 is that the 180 has a longer first gear (will do near 40mph in 1st)

Owned both and the 180 is a much better car over the 138, corners flatter and seems to turn in a lot better, I couldnt believe the amount of grip it had, I threw it into some corners at stupid speeds and it always stuck.

Friends of mine had a 172's and in a straight line there was nothing in it, whoever was in front stayed in front.

Power wise the 180 is a lot more urgent than the 138, has a great induction note aswell, they tend to make around 165-175 on rolling roads so very similar to the 172 which rarely makes manufacturers figures.

138 is a lot better on fuel, I managed 38.8 mpg on a run once in the 180 but that was sticking to 55-60 and changing gear around 2,500 rpm.

peak power is 7,000rpm (7,300 rpm redline) so they need to be revved to keep on the boil, mine had a software update which put the rev limiter down to 6800 rpm, caught me out on the test drive a couple of times

They get slated by people but all the reviews I have seen bar EVO seemed to give it a good right up, even clarkson enjoyed it

Thanks for the info fella

What was it like fuel wise on short journeys? About 25mpg? Can't be worse than what I'm getting now which works out about 20

It wasnt horrendous, warmed up quite quickly, I think I averaged around 33mpg over ownership, but was driving 330 miles a week, so didnt do many short trips.

They do use a bit of oil due to the VVT setup, mine used to use around .5 litre every 1000miles. I used to change the oil and filter every 6months (total quartz 5w40)

They also drive very lumpy from cold, once warmed up though they are fine.

Clutches are a weak link due to the lightened flywheel which causes judder and eventually destroys the release bearing, mine was unrecognisable as it was in that many pieces when removed. I changed mine around 45,000 miles, clutch cost £100 absolute pig of a job due to the limited space and I did mine on axle stands, inlet manifold has to be taken off to remove starter motor but the radiator has to be removed to get the inlet manifold out.

They have a sports cat as standard which can be pricey to replace, exhausts rot and are expensive so most are fitted with scorpion cat back systems. gas filled shocks which again are expensive.

Quite a lot of differences engine wise over the 138, especially the cylinder head

It wasnt so much the idle although it did hunt a bit, just driving from cold, it would be very jerky and unresponsive until it warmed up.

found a link with all the differences between the 138 and 180

I liked my old 138 tbh. Was pretty revvy, hit 100 easy and was fun on the twisties. Lift off over-steer was pretty bad though but made it interesting.

Mine never hunted just felt like there was a slight miss on idle when cold, went away soon as it was warm
