Taking a punt and applied for a job last night as applications opened early for a few people, officially they opened today.... as a Ski Resort Rep. They emailed this morning inviting me to an interview which I've booked. I'll be applying to the other 2 major tour operators as well to see who would offer the best package if I were to have a choice of companies to work for, assuming at least one offers me a job!

Been doing the current job for 9years and in the trade for 17years when I started Saturday mornings and school holidays when I was 12 years old!

HUGE pay cut but feel it's something I need to do before I get too old, married and having kids!

Anyone else taken a similar leap of faith?!

Mental decision, but if you're not happy and this will make you happier, then so be it. Got to think though, can you see yourself there in 9 years if you get it? If not, it's probably not the right route to go down.

Go for it. My major regret is not doing a season away but it will now never happen with wife and kids.

My biggest problems I've come up with while going through this is:

1) What to do with my house while I'm away
2) What to do with my cats while I'm away

Solutions I've come up with are:

1) Keep my current lodger and get another one in to bring in more rent to cover the costs, they'd be able to look after the cats and when I return to the country, I have somewhere to sleep!

2) Rent the house out, more income but costs incurred will be storage for my stuff! and paying someone to take on / look after my cats

or

Give the cats up altogether, that really would be last resort

Whittie, hi!

I don't think I'd be doing it in 9years but it may give me a different perspective on life etc. and get me away from the motor trade, into something else where I wouldn't have to work weekends (which I hate!)

LeeM, my sister has 2cats already, so couldn't go there. Only leaves my dad really and I've dropped him plenty of hints for which he's decided not to take that bait!

I would certainly recommend it mate, I left the motor trade after 4 years a while ago and it was the best decision I have made, despite being rather nervous and having fairly good job prospects.

The way I looked at it was firstly i never ever want to end up like some of the guys i worked with, which was working a job they hated to just pay their way, with no way out cos of mortgage etc, and to be honest very little career prospects especially as the motor trade is going further and further down hill
I also got sucked into working stupid hours all the time chasing bonus and it really did fuck me, like i was doing 8am-8pm regularly, and it is very hard work. I would go home and not go out because i was too tired and just filthy, so lost contact with a lot of mates etc.

As well, being a Ski rep would be awesome, think of the chalet girls, the shorter hours, the fact you would be basically exercising/having fun for work, and the ability to be able to walk off the slopes into the bar!

I was offered a change from legal work - which I'd studied for at a level / degree - into a high up accounts position.
Not as drastic but was a sideways step away from everything I'd studied for.

Was a head or heart decision.
Head won.

My sister did it for one year-she's now on year 8 and they've promoted her to hotel manager on a decent pay scale but she's had 7 years barely earning enough to live but she loves it

Don't expect short hours and endless time off to hit the slopes though.

Which company/resort?

Ah, that was my assumption from when I had a ski instructor in France, he seemed to work about 6 hours a day! god knows how much time he spent sorting stuff out though.
Ill rephrase my above rant with 'fun' hours, assuming you do not find working at your garage much fun

I think your main issue will be the age gap to your peers-company dependent-at 26, my sister is referred to as mum as the average person who goes over there is on a pre or post uni gap year so no more than 21/22.

Livelee...

Got an interview with Crystal, also applying with Neilson and Inghams and see who offers the best terms. I know its long hours, especially transfer day! But that is part of the fun of it, being organised, getting people into resorts and (hopefully!) watching it work like clockwork!

I think my age will go in my favour as far as getting the job and being taken a bit more seriously than some of the other reps. I would treat it as a job with plenty of boarding a massive bonus! Whereas a lot of them aren't interested in getting the job done 110% effectively but moreso hitting the slopes every opportunity. I would probably also be more inclined to socialise with the older people as I'm not a huge party person! So could offer an alternative dimension to the rep job other than showing everyone the best place to go and get as pissed as possible, which is what most of these young reps seem to want to do!

I enjoy sales and paperwork bits so would view to move upward within the company after seeing how it all works and learning the trade

I'd take an out from the motor trade if I had one. Been in it since I left school and long hours and silly schedules have taken the fun out of things. Go for it!

Got my eyes open for jobs, not much I fancy though. Need to get out the trade though, or diversify.

The whole career boat left port a while go, just after a job really that's interesting.
