Me and the missus are looking for a new car to share that is cheaper on fuel than my 330 and more practical than her mr2 our budget is £7k max and the criteria is
-somewhere for the dog so a hatchback pretty much.
- fun to drive, she wants an a3 I couldn't think of any thing of I'd rather not buy.
- half decent on fuel for her drive to work (mainly motorway).
- no older than 2005 ideally.

All I've come up with so far is fn2 type r and clio 197.
Astra vxrs are off the list.
I'm not a big fan of corsa vxrs
Mini Cooper s too heavy on fuel probably.

It's hard for two people to agree on a car

A Cooper S will not be worse than a 197.

It's a difficult criteria to match on that budget as fun to drive doesn't come with MPG unless you go for a quick diesel which it's looks like your trying to get anyway from.

Other cars I would consider with that budget would;
Megane R26 (will be a older one but better mpg than the Clio and bigger)
Clio R27 (as opposed to the 197)
Golf GTI (never driven one so can't comment on fun but strikes me as meeting rest of criteria)
Z4 (leve the dog at home)
Evo 7/8 (not sure if fuel will be much worse than a 197 - early 20's?)
early E46 M3

If your allowing diesels;
Ibiza FR
Fabia VRS

I'd love an m3 or an Evo not a chance she would go for one.
Golf gti is a no from me.
Z4 is a no as we want 4 seats.

What's the difference between a 197 and a r27
I was under the impression 197s ate quite good on petrol.

No diesels

The 'R' versions of the renaults are limited edition models of the current model ie 197 is the R27 and the Megane 225 is the R26. They are essentially full fats with cup packs and a few toys. They also come standard with the recaros. You could find a few non R cars with the same spec (minus the F1 deals) but they are few and far between and will not hold its value like the limited edition cars. Also as demand effects thigs the Clio and the Megane are the same price.

One of my brothers has the R27. It's an amazing car to drive but he struggles to keep 28mpg average on it). My other brother who has an R26 (with approx 270/275bhp) gets nearer 30/31 on a run.

If your going for either a Rennault sport Megane or Clio then go for the limited edition model as they will meet your budget.

The r27 is a great car. Expect to pay around 7k for a 50k 07 plate.

R27 seem hard to find none on eBay.
I really don't want a golf/a3 or Leon they just seem boring to me and I can't imagine them being fun to drive.

my leon wasn't too bad admittedly didn't feel as solid as the civic (which tbf I haven't really pushed but at slow speeds it feels a lot more planted).

I like 1 series (and bmws in general) but can't imagine a small diesel will be fun.

There is a few on eBay then, looking promising need to test drive one, went to see one yesterday and the guy practically wanted me to commit to buy the car before I could test drive it.

As above or a 320 petrol. I can't see you liking a hatchback after being used to the 330. Are e92 coupes cheap enough yet?
