Might as well start a thread.

Seems to be a few of us running/starting running.

I've never liked running and was crap as a youngster due to a bit of asthma. But i'm doing a 5k in december and am running twice a week now and did 5k last night for the first time since 2011.

I've entered the Bupa Great Manchester Run for next May which is 10k so need to get to that distance. I'm aiming for under 1hr.

I've also registered with Parkrun so I can attend my local one, but opportunity will be limited as its 9am every Saturday and I take my son to Rugbytots at that time.

Have the Run to the Beat half coming up in September then already registered for the BUPA 10000 in May next year and the Silverstone half once it becomes available. Applied for London but lets see.

After that id like to try some triathlon training, seems a bit more varied anf fun

I went from being unable to run for more than 30 seconds to a half marathon in 30 sessions.

Started to follow a couch potato to 10k plan and once I could run a half decent distance just built the distance up each time.

Do a 10K at least once a week now just to keep a base level of running fitness.

I run for fun and you will find that you get into the swing of things really quickly.

My targets for the next 12 months are:
5k - sub 19:30
10k - sub 40 mins
Half marathon - sub 1hr 30 mins

Best to get yourself to a proper running shop and they will video you running on a machine to determine the type of runner you are, and therefore be able to recommend some trainers to suit you.

I didn't do this btw.

Current PB's are:

1k - 03:53
1m - 06:14
5k - 19:45
10k - 43:20
HM - 01:35:11

Keep running regularly and times start to tumble, you've just got to stick at it. I'm currently following a Hal Higdon training plan, it's worth googling.

My current running trainers are either...

Runtastic that i used for first time seemd to be very good, tracks you through gps, times you, calories burnt etc and if you listen to your music through your phone while running theres a voice that updates you every mile how far youve got and how long/your pace, them trainers with the toes in look mental

New Balance do wide & extra wide fitting shoes so get yourself to a running shop, get your gait analysed and let them offer you the type for your feet. They wont rip you off with the most expensive, they'll let you decide whats comfiest.

Currently upping the milage for the Great North Run, then wait till Oct for London Marathon ballot and hopefully carry on the training from there. If not London it'll be another one around the same time.

I'm doing the great north again this year, currently running between 10-15k three times a week to bring my times down. Hopefully in 5 weeks they'll have tumbled :-)

Did it last year in 2:11 but hadn't run more than half the distance in one go.

1:45 would be brilliant, under 2 hours would be nice if not
