Got on plane. Then had to get off. 5 hour delay. Finally get on a plane which needed to come to Gatwick to pick up stuff. Get to airport for pilot to say there is smoke coming from wings evacuate..... Emergency chutes, women and kids screaming. Like something on a movie. Laura got to go down escape chute sat in terminal for a few hours for them to unload us and cancel the flight. Now flying tomorrow so just got to Hilton at gatwicjk. Free food and lodgings til tomorrow when we fly again some time. Going camping next year

Sounds fun!

Not who was the airline and how did they manage the safety aspect, professionally or haphazard

I would definitely be going down the emergency shute. Not a chance i'd vacate like a normal person if they've gone and put them out for you.

Oh, before I forget. As the fault was obviously with the plane, you'll more than likely be able to claim for time lost on your holiday.

I know most people don't like that idea, but if you've paid for a holiday and lost a day through no fault of your own, you should definitely be getting re-imbursed.

I agree with Ben, why not claim... why should a multi-million pound company not have to pay for faults. You would if it was the other way around

CAA will class it as exceptional circumstances, and will be flown out of Gatwick 23hrs55mins after original departure time so can't get money back from holiday.

Also if you accept the food / hotel / drinks etc that is seen as compensation, hope you didn't sign for any of them.

Worth trying on your return mind.

Was it bedlam getting off if the pilot was telling you to evacuate? I bet people were trying to get their bags still.

It takes so long usually with all the dithering getting off a plane.

you'll be entitled to compensation where the airline is at fault

Source
Only applies where the airline company is at fault, not the terminal or weather conditions etc.

Usually not if you accept food / drink vouchers and hotels.

Way to do it is sort your own and claim back expenses as well as compensation.

If delayed for more than 24hrs from original departure time, can choose not to go and have full refund. Its also the push back time from the gate they use not the actual departure time.
