Evening

I'm going to be selling my civic in aid of putting a little more money towards the house fund and I need a car that averages more than 24mpg etc. I quite fancy a rwd car as never had one and have spent most of the day looking at mx-5's?

Budget is around the £5k mark but there is too much choice?

I do around 15,000 miles at year at the moment and am looking at spening up to £5k, space isn't an issue so 2 seaters are an option?

Insruance wise I don't mind if its as high as the Type R but don't want to go above this, also don't want to be paying £280 a year road tax.

I think some form of BMW is most likely?

As I've owned one, I don't think you'd want to do 15k a year in an mx5. People who've driven one once will tell you otherwise but I couldn't have subbed it for the alfa.

Great car, I sold mine to fund some extra camper bits but wish I hadn't. We are going to weigh up getting a mk2 one, a z3 or spend a little more and get an SLK for Lauren.

i have been driving my 1993, 1.6 MX5 for 4 years as my dialy driver having covered 60k miles in that time...which happens to average 15k/year

i get around 30-32mpg but can get a lot more if i choose to be sensible/Mway driving.
i had (before moving close to work to allow me to drive) a twenty minute commute on fast, single carraige way A/B roads and so wasnt long enough to worry much about commuting comfort.

i drive mine with the roof down 24/7 and love it, on track i am as quick as most things i come across in the bends, and being MX5 offers plenty of toys to help keep up with faster cars (i however have kept mined"standard")

for £5k you can get a very tidy one, i got mine for £1900 with 60K miles on the clock and being Jap nothing expensive has gone wrong.

if you really do want comfort and fuel efficiency go Beemer though, there is too much temptation to rev an MX5 and get the most out of it and although not uncomfortable, there are far more comfortable cars out there...

Z4 3.0i, although it's in the 280 quid tax band.

Cheap on insurance and will get 30mpg if driven normally.

Z4 3.0 gets 30mpg??

You mean on a motorway?

Dan lives near me and it is all pretty much built up town roads round here. Dad has a 330 (same engine) and averages 19mpg.

So I don't think that's a sensible option. I fact any petrol engine is flawed evonomy wise unless asthmatic and tiny.

320d is a good shout, but be wary of turbo failure N47 timing chain rattle and swirl flaps. All potentially wallet hurting

I can see 40mpg on motorway run easy. It's a pretty good engine. Shit for short journeys tho

Your dads an auto jambo?

I get 26mpg around town. The 330 is probably quite a bit heavier also.

Yeah the Z4 is lighter and yeah was auto.

But he said he needs something more economical than the 24mpg he's getting now (guessing that's round town)

He also mentioned s2000's, which are near as can be identical to z4's.

Why not just get a face-lift EP3 for around £3.5-£4k??

S2000 is ruled straight out because of this tbh, and as Jambi has said it's all B roads round here so mpg does suffer!
