Morning all im just looking for some information for my sister's boyfriend he is only 17 and wants to get into rally cross he wants to know what the cost is involved from starting from scratch a list and estimated cost would be good I have tryed explaining it is expensive but he will not listen and thinks its the case buying a second hand rally car and then can enter into rally cross.

Thanks in advance for any information.

I'd have thought his first port of call would be someone like the BTRDA.

Watch that episode of top gear where they do it,
But costs alot more than they make out.
But most guys do a set of tyres a meet atleast.

I have tryed so hard to explaine its not the caes of buying a car and then ya sorted the lad cant even start a car let alone drive but he wants the info so i said id try and get him some haha.

I have never entered rallying.
But to build a car from scratch and to spend big money on things like suspension and handling aswell as performance, surely you're talking 10k+

Maybe better off trying grass tracking instead. Seems much easier and cheaper to get into....

He'll also have to factor into it getting bashed about a bit on track, RX isn't much of a non-contact sport!

What about hillclimbs or sprints?

Indeed. Rallycross cars get absolutely fucked at every meet.

The attrition rate for bodywork and for parts like windscreens, tires, bushes, dampers and springs is incredibly high, owing to the rough/violent nature of the surface and the racing.

He'll need a tow vehicle and trailer, plus a minimal tools and parts stash at the very least.

Plus he won't be eligible to tow, so he will need someone who is, to drive the tow vehicle, or he'll need to gain the qualification on his licence.

It's all money money money.

The only reason I haven't been taking part in some form of motorsport for the past 20+ years is a lack of funding. And i'm sure the same thing applies to most people on here.

Of course he'll be eligible to tow,
depending what car he wants to use of course.

Could easily tow say a small hatchback behind a mondeo with the right trailer and be with in the weight rules.

Remember the rules are:
Tow car MAM + trailer MAM must be less than 3.5t,
And trailer MAM must be less than tow car kerb weight.
Obviously also must be with in the cars train weight.

Precisely.

Up until March of this year, I worked at a garage that kept a small fleet of trailers for rental.

The governor was the MOT tester, so had an accurate database of vehicle weights, as well as of his own trailers.

And in practice, without fail, 100% of the young chaps that had acquired their licence after Jan '97 that came in for a trailer, exceeded the maximum weight with the car on. So all they could do was take the trailer home empty and then get their Father, Uncle, or an older pal with the correct entitlement to drive it loaded for them.

Most of them weren't even aware of the rulings and had no idea that they would be liable for prosecution if they drove with the vehicle combination fully laiden.

Even with the trailer empty they are breaking the law if its plated too high,

Obviously I'm assuming he's wanted a small hatch, as at 17 I certainly couldn't afford anything but lol.

Tell him to get on the Internet and find out costs of what he needs by doing research himself giving him more of an insight into what actually goes on in the sport too. Pipe dream.

If he's really wanting to get into competition I'd say get him into rally co-driving, it's not cheap but it's far less expensive than driving. It'll get him a name within the sport which will help him when he manages to start driving, which always helps!

Or get into autograss. £1500 will bet you a newly built 1lt micra built to reg's, suit, helmet, licence etc
Ready to race.
Good way to start, do 6months then look at a bigger car etc

Take him to Lydden for a day out Liam.

Once he's seen Pat Doran's current car and support barge etc, let him know what Doran does for a living.

That might give him some idea of the kind of money he'll need.

He has gone off the idea of doing rally now but wants to get a corsa B and make it look like a rally with the lamps on the bonnet and everything
