Son got a reasonable amount of money for his christening so want to find something to put away for when he's older. Mrs has informed a personalised knife is not an option so watch was the next idea.
I know nothing about watches but know there are plenty on here that do. He's not got a portfolio budget but looking to spend around £150
Any suggestions?

Something like an automatic Seiko would be nice. I like the divers style:

Or something a bit more classic:

Are either f them going to become more expensive over time? withour being disrespectful its just a £150 watch, theres are thousands of watches in that price range. You would be better off outtig the said £150 into a savings account for the boy, one which u cant touch until his 18th. By that time u will have made more in interest than waht a 150 worth of watch would have in value

^ This.

Without being harsh, £150 will get you a very average watch.

What is the point in purchasing something now that he can't use for years anyway?

Fashion doesn't really matter when it's got sentimental value. I've got a seiko kinetic I was bought for getting some award at school when I was 15, it gets worn all the time and don't care if its in fashion.

A bus can drive you, but you own a car?

I'd put it into Premium Bonds for a few years and hope it rises.

Also if you go with something reasonable (I.e. auto) it will be dried out, seized up and fucked by the time you give it to him ..

Why not buy £150 worth of bonds?

Couple of the chaps at work have an expensive bottle of spirits that their dad got them when they were born, not to be opened until they have 1st child, Guy in my office is due a child in February and is going to open his 34yr old bottle of drink and buy a new one for his kid.

is a nice touch imo

Afaik, bottle storage does nothing to improve most/any spirits. On the contrary, they'll probably have been better from new.

If that's the path you want to take, put the money aside and then buy something of the appropriate age. Of course, finding any odd age might prove difficult...

I agree, doesn't do anything for the age, its just a 12yr old whiskey in a 30yr old bottle for example

It needs to be stored right too. One guy on Pawn Stars had a 100 year old bottle of Dom and he stored it wrong. It was basically piss.

The only value the watch will have in the future, is sentimental value.
Wouldn't bother at £150, tbh.

I'd save a bit more and get something used from a specialist watch dealer, rather than an ordinary new watch.

An all steel Tag SEL with the leather strap would be a good choice as they are FAR cheaper 2nd hand than they or their higher specced counteparts ever were new. They seem to be bottoming out a bit and I doubt they'll get much cheaper.

Maybe a really early LED digital from Pulsar would be another good choice, or investment, for example.

Or maybe something odd/mad like a rare Swatch or even a Nixie watch.
