What do we think? Preview here...

280bhp minimum sounds interesting, surely this will be going against the bigger boys rather than the hot hatches like the Corsa VXR?

Whilst we're discussing new models, to a lesser extent here's the new Mini Cooper S...

Which I guess obviously, looks exactly the same. Although I think the rear is slightly worse, looks really boxy. Are they ever going to do something properly different? I know "If it's not broke, don't fix it" but come on sometimes things need a real refresh.

Finally, the Nismo GT-R...

I like the wheels, not sure on the black bits or the exhaust though. Estimated to be around £100,000 though... I think that's pretty crazy.

Civic has always been Astra/Megane sized? Never a Corsa competitor?

think the mini will be based on the new BMW platform as next gen 1 series etc will be front wheel drive so expect the mini to be similar size to a 1 series

Mini looks odd but people will get used to it and like it in no time. R56 JCW with red roof and mirrors is still the best one though.

The Civic looks ok to me.

Both the Honda and Nissan look very 2000, very Halfords with the bodykits.

For people saying the Civic has always competed with bigger cars... how comes one of the biggest hot hatch rivalries in a previous generation of cars was the EP3 Civic Type-R Vs Clio 182?

Back then not many hatch's had over 200 bhp, it's pretty much the norm now. Even the Clio is forced induction. Both handled well, and are about the same in a straight line. The Megane 225 was the new benchmark, now hot hatch's are fat with high power output. Even the MINI is massive.

Is the current MCS a 1.6 Turbo? Because the new one is a 2.0 Turbo with no power increase what's the point, more economical? Or just to battle the extra weight I wonder.

Civic is a very early prototype, the finished car will be on sale in 2015 so might not even be that shape!

Yes it's a 1.6 turbo. Seems strange they've gone to a bigger engine. The rest of the BMW range and a lot of other manufacturers are going for smaller engines with each new model released, not bigger. Maybe it's sharing the engine with a future 1 or 3 series BMW?

Indeed. a camo'd up one has been seen tearing around the ring alot with tarquini (sp) the honda WTC driver at the wheel. Apparently they want the production hatch record off of the megane and have been getting close already

300bhp 2.0t new engine to meet the new EU emissions regs
mechanical limited slip diff
new rear suspension setup
even rumor of a return of rear wheel steering

Sounds interesting and hope its good so they can get back on the hot hatch table

pics etc here
