D2R bulbs.
Bang D2R bulbs into Ebay search, and take your pick.

Both Osram and Phillips do upgraded xenon bulbs. Cheaper and better than originals.
I replaced my factory bulbs with a cheap china option and they gave noticably worse light.

BMW use Phillips bulbs from factory.
Osram are obviously a good choice

Thanks for the feedback Gents.
So I need to get a pair of D2R bulbs and I have the choice between OE or Enhanced.
OE Option:

Enhanced Option:
http://www.powerbulbs.com/product/xenon-x-tremevision-d2r-85126-single
I assume that I am right in thinking that HID bulbs will degrade over time? My car is 9 years old and I certainly havent changed the bulbs in the last 3 years so I assume they are still the same ones from factory.
They just seem a bit dull this year.
Are there real benefits from getting the enhanced bulbs? They are double the price but I am wondering if just getting a new pair of OE bulbs will make a massive difference over some 9yo bulbs.
Thanks again for the feedback chaps, very helpful. Not had HID's before so not sure about how they degrade over time.

I have looked for the same bulbs on ebay, they are a hell of a lot cheaper! Should I be worried?
OE Option (£44.82 a pair vs £110):

Enhanced Option (£119 a pair vs £190):

Yeah, those eBay links I have provided are not even the cheapest options.
I'm wondering if the enhanced bulbs are worth it at £119. Are they MOT legal?

I would say a pair of others from Ebay at £9.99 would be worth it. lol.

Considering you have to take the wheels off to change bulbs on my car I would rather not risk getting cheap crap ones and having to change them again!

They'll be shit and give off a worse light than brand name halogens.

They will be legal. If they're worth it depends how much rural driving you do, I guess.

Not that much tbh. Maybe not not enough to warrant twice the price. I will see what the bank balance looks like after Christmas/New Years!
The car is due a service so I will buy them in Jan and get the garage to fit them. While they are doing it I will get some decent main beam bulbs as well

Hows that??
Surely if they were that bad, they wouldn't have sold in the billions.

They are £9.99 for a reason, mainly being ether designed on the cheap, made on the cheap or constructed using cheap materials or a combination of the three.
Don't be a pikey Xenon bulbs cost is what it is, part of maintaining the car properly. Get OeM spec bulbs install and forget.

Aren't you the bloke who spent hundreds on doing a Xenon conversion with the best of parts and never got them working properly??
If so, then your opinion is invalid.

They worked perfectly, I had a small earthing issue.
Not quite sure what that has to do with bargain basement bulbs?!

I just can't quite make out why the cheaper bulbs would be that much worse to warrant not using them.
I would be happy if someone who knew what they were talking about could explain why, not just hearsay and making shit up.

Cheaper bulbs tend not to have a UV coating on them, that causes your headlights to fog over as it degrades the lens, expecially if they're plastic.
They're also not made to the same standards, poor quality metals, soldering, all of that stuff, means that they wot last as long.
Philips ones and Osram ones, amongst others, will have TUV approval, they'll be type approved so they're definitely made to the same spec, they'll also have an E mark. Cheap Chinese ones won't so they will be illegal and fail an mot if spotted.

I'm telling you my experience based on me owning a car with factory fitted HIDs.
I couldn't care less about the technical reasons for cheaper bulbs being terrible, but I certainly don't see how it's hard to believe that a China knock off at a 10th the price isn't equal in quality.
Your argument about sales number being a sign for quality is of course entirely flawed as well.

The irony obviously being that you are the only one doing this.
