Everyone loves a good watch thread 
Pretty sure I posted a similar thread a while back when I was looking before. I have a habit of planning to buy something then getting distracted by other stuff and not buying it, but now I'm looking to buy a watch 
I want something that I can wear to work or out in the evening etc, so I guess I want a bit of an "all-rounder".
I want a leather strap, and nothing too "busy", although don't mind a bit of chronograph if it's smart. I know almost nothing about watches, just want a decent quality one that looks smart. No budget really, but I'd draw the line at about £2k, don't want to spend that much if I can avoid it though.
These are top 3 at the moment, I really like the RW watch but the strap looks cheap and shit.

To be fair, with the budget you have, the list is going to be endless.
Stowa, Sinn, Domasko, Oris, Longines, Omega. All of these brands will have a watch that fit your criteria. And there is loads more.
You could also get what your looking for at under £600, easily.
Aftermarket watch straps can be bought online as well so i wouldnt worry about the strap being crap.

James, you have a very similar taste in watches to me.
Personally I'd go for the Weil, have loved that watch for years.
Like Pete says, there's a lot of options in your budget and style. Longines is definitely a brand I'd be looking at too.
Love the Evidenza for being a bit different from the norm.

I really like the RW actually.
I just got back from the Caribbean and I tried the RW on while I was out there, it was £500 less than the UK. Starting to wish I had bought it now

My Pa has a Girard Perregaux and an Omega, the jammy sod.
Do like a nice watch. Doesn't have to be super dear though. You can get some really interesting and affordable watches, especially 2nd hand. I've liked some very affordable stuff, which is very unlike me.

2 Stowa are much nicer than the RW imo.

Never buy a Baume new. Depreciate like a stone. Darren Reay - wights watches sells them very cheap iirc

The second Stowa for me, the Weil is a bit too fussy looking in my opinion.

Personal taste is a funny thing.
I quite like the look of the Stowa, but wouldn't have one. It looks too much like the massive clock from the platform or concourse of an old railway station to me. If it was a massive clock, i'd have one for the back wall of the garage though.
Plus to my mind, buying a German watch would be a tiny bit like buying French Guinness, or American cheese

Not saying there's anything wrong with it. I wouldn't be surprised if they were very well designed, engineered and assembled.
But to my mind, if it's not a cheapie, it's gotta be Swiss John

£2k is an awkward budget...it doesn't really reach enough of new watches to make it 'worthwhile' in the sense you will be wearing something that not many would aspire to
I'd go pre worn - something like this

Surprised people spend so much money on something that's clearly been worn. If it was immaculate maybe, but that needs a new strap at least.

It's like insisting on a brand new car; but knowing its worth £x less as soon as you drive it off the forecourt

Depends john on how you define loads of watch
I.e 2k may get you a universal movement used in loads of brands or may get you a in house movement
When spending 2k upwards it's more than presentation you are starting to buy into movements etc

Your baume and Mercier which is over 2k AFAIK uses a valjoux movement. Loads use ETA movements, including IWC. I know what you get and don't get at each price bracket. You may not get Manufacture d'horlogerie for that but there are still loads of watches, with perfectly good movements.

My point was just that spending over 2k doesn't mean you get anything technically different.
One for you actually Jules. Your Panerai. Is that from before they started making their own movements again. Is that from Valjoux?
