I posted a few months ago about how my MBA keeps literally eating up the space on my hard-drive, and queried whether it couyld be failed udpates or something as I had generally only 1GB of space free at any one time (max) whereas most system updates require 1GB+ to perform. Having run the Mavericks update last night my system manager space bar has finally started working again so I can visualise the issue... how is "Other" taking up more space than ANYTHING else on my harddrive?!?!?! And how the fuck can I clear it so I can reclaim my space??

PS not interested in comments about managing the rest of the contents of my harddrive

Other, i.e. System files, 36gb seems reasonable in this day and age of computing. You should consider:

* Buying a bigger SSD drive for your laptop
* Question having 33GB of photos, are they all high def raw photos from your camera? Perhaps you should consider resizing them to a more reasonable size.

My "other" is nearly 90 GB. I certainly don't see anything alarming with your numbers.

Put your movies and photos on a portable HD, possibly even music depending how much you listen to all of it. As said your other files size is pretty normal

I think its that huge pile of shit in the background taking up all the space tbh.

other than that go for a larger drive or transfer all music/movies and photos to a USB drive.

THAT IS NOT FUCKING NORMAL WHAT THE FUCK IS IT!

example, a few months ago i had 3GB spare space. A few days later, having imported a few photos and apps perhaps it was down to 300MB.

"Clean My Mac" will sort out your shit with one click, but costs £34.99:

Alternatively, slightly less user friendly but free "Onyx":

It is normal. When your computer is running, it does lots of stuff in the background. It creates temporary files that change in size all the time. When you open your Arsenal pictures, it'll create temporary files in the background.

Stop focussing on the 'other' and focus on the things you do know, like half of the drive being taken up by movies and photos.

It all serious though, it's likely to be a mixture of cached files (from a multitude of system and non-system apps) and logs. Either way, it's perfectly normal and you best solution is to move your 81GB (63% of your storage) of media off to another drive or at least transfer the less used files.
Alternatively upgrade the internal drive - OWC might be your best bet for an upgrade drive.

No, the dodgy one that pops up when you're doing naughty things on teh internets is MacKeeper, which you should avoid.
