Having just bought my house I was planning on finishing my 106 gti off in the summer, would have had to put 1000+ into it and a bit of time that I don't have.
So I'm tempted to sell it and buy a kit car that's already done.
I can't seem to find any forums or websites that sell them apart from eBay and that only has a handful.
Anyone on here own on? If so what spec
Any forums you guys know of ?

I think I want one that's complete.
I don't like the idea of working on someone else's project.
It could turn out to be a nightmare.

My advice would be to run away from anything nearly finished, normally means there's a massive great reason the person hasn't done it.
Try RHOCAR forum. They also attend all the big shows which if you're serious is also an excellent place to do a deal, most have a dedicated for sale area and you can talk to people about particularly kits and builds on the club stands.

PH hasn't had many on since it started charging for classifieds-kit car magazine is a good place to start, eBay had a few but they can be listed in unusual places otherwise try forums for the individual manufacturers.

Curious why he hasn't bought Kawasaki coil packs if that cured it.
Also needs an air filter - also not rocket science.
Looks to already have had an SVA/IVA as its registered - which is one of the biggest reasons not to buy one. That does seem a small list to be moving it on not working.
Ask him when he wants his £1995.

There are pros and cons of both Jas, I used to have a 1600 x-flow one and now I'm rebuilding a fireblade engined one.
Car engined ones are obviously stronger, as they're designed to lug a large weight around, the mechanics are relatively simple, parts are readily available and if you choose the right engine, they can be insanely fast.
Bike engined ones tend to be more tempremental, as they weren't designed to power the weight of a car. But again, if you get the right one, they can very quick 0-60 but with a lower top end (which not many people need anyway) and you have the thrill of a high-revving engine just inches from your feet.
General maintenance is slightly more regular for the bike engines and you have the potential problem of oil starvation due to the sump design and difference from intended use & orientation of the engine, but if you look after them, they can last as well as a car engine.

Only sharing a workshop with Ste on here who has done a few and is currently doing another one.
Basically when its on wheels and rolling and you think yeah, that looks like a car, you're about 5% of the way there.
Even an engine in the bay - particularly motorbike engine - means nothing until its connected to a prop and a diff, has a gear linkage, clutch, fits around the steering column, blah blah blah.
No specific experience but I wouldn't take one on thinking its only a small job to fix - they rarely are.

^^ what he said. You'd be better getting one that needs 'TLC' that runs and works (like mine did/does)than building one yourself from scratch unless you're extremely patient and mechanically-minded.
The IVA/SVA tests can be a bit of a nightmare if internet stories are anything to go by.
A pinto locost or robin hood would be a good 'budget' one to tackle first.

My Dad's is coming out of winter hybernation soon. Was fired up today for first time since October. Pretty suprised my Dad let it go that long without at least letting it run static. He knows a lot more than me though!
Hopefully make it to Stoneleigh this year!
I agree though that a runner needing TLC is a better option than taking on someone's bodge job.

I'm leaning to wards zetec to be honest or something similar.
I don't want to buy a pinto and regret not spendin an extra 1000 on a car with an extra 30-40bhp as standard
It's only a weekend toy so I want a thrill.
The bike engined ones look great fun, but I can imagine 150-170bhp zetec in a 600kg car would be pretty fun too

Go to a kit car show, have a look at all the different cars, you'd be surprised how many variants there are. Talk to owners, look at the build quality, ask them about handling, as some are good, some amazing and some utter shite.
I might have missed it, but what's your budget?
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

I'm not even talking about someone else's bodge job, I'm on about the cost to do something as simple as connect the engine to the wheels.
Even being mechanically minded isn't going to get you out of needing to speak to someone who can knock up a bespoke bell housing, match the splines, get the prop the right length but still balanced etc. etc.
All of that you can't do in your garage = $$$, particularly for the more obscure conversions. The Pinto is popular because it uses a lot of parts from one car. The Zetec you're in to the territory of needing a custom bell housing and sump but they're popular enough that this is less of a worry.
Bike engine you're basically down to a small number of specialists. Its certainly a lot better supported than when it first became popular but there are still lots of things costing lots of money need buying before it will drive.
Also yes - get to a show.
