Have you mixed 2 different types of fluid together? E.g dot 4 and dot 5.1?

I haven't. Just used what it says on the cap.
Though come to think of it, I had a garage swap my rear calipers a week after I did the fronts (due to seized bolts) so wondering what they put in to bleed the rears...

I tried to smell it, but couldn't really make anything out.

Power steering fluid is usually red. Don't think mixing the two brake fluids together will create that either?
It looks proper lumpy and horrible.
Is there actual brake fluid in there aswell as this green goop or is it full on goop?

Colour depends on the type.. Dextron 2 (red) is what many manufacturers use for PAS and it's also auto trans fluid. VAG crap is green and mineral oil..
Either way, no idea what that gunk is but I know that I would be bleeding the entire system and replacing the fluid, hopefully it's just down to a dodgy mix of stuff

I sure I have read of something similar in the past and it was due to the fluid reacting with the copper on the pipes. I'm pretty sure it stems from using dot 5 which has a silicate in it to stop it absorbing water and the tea tion with the copper causing the slime/gunge. this could ring true as a daily using dot 5 can cause issues due to the non water absorbtion. I could be way off though.

The copper reaction came up on scoobynet, but some people seem sure that there's no copper in the system to react with.
Will give it all a good flush through next weekend, then keep an eye on it.

That's bizarre Kyle. I've not encountered anything like that in a brake reservoir before.
I'd be getting that out of there tout suite and have the system pressure bled to (hopefully) clear it all out.
I wouldn't be using the car before it gets done either, as it's better to assume that whatever it is, will do damage, the longer it's left.
Plus I wouldn't expect the braking system to be effective (especially when subject to heat), with any kind of contamination to, or reaction of, the brake fluid therein.

That seems the most likely culrit, mixed brake fluids. Might have been some residue left of the old stuff.

Dropped car off to get baffled sump fitted today, showed them pictures above and they had never seen anything like it. They said they've seen mixed grade of fluid before, and that's not what happens.
Needless to say they're flushing and refilling for me while they've got it... saves me a job.

I see a few cars at work with the same stuff. I just assumed it was possibly emulsified from condensation or some kind of water ingress. Wipes/flushes out fine and i've yet to see any detrimental affect to the brakes from it.
