Long story short, I failed GSCE English. Although I was more than capable, I didn't attend school much, and I know it's my fault.


I now want to do something about it, and I don't mind paying. I've searched online, but ideally I'd like to do something from home quickly. Do any of you have experience with this, or recommendations?

I've looked at the exact same thing and can only find ridiculously long 1 hour a week night courses.

Would rather do some thing online / at home where I can smash through in my own time

Hopefully can help eachother find something Matt. I've been told I can get a course for free, but I'd rather pay couple of hundred and do it quickly.

In all honesty is there actually much point? GCSEs basically become redundant once you hit college. The jobs I've done, no one has ever asked. Fair enough if its something you want to do but is it worth the effort?

Is GCSE the equivalent of Scottish Standard Grade? That's at turn up knowing nothing and getting a pass level.

Save your time and money and do a proper qualification or apprenticeship.

Why not just do a level 2 in english? Can just drop in college and do the test?

In my experience, requiring English for an apprenticeship in something non literature based is to show that you've managed to turn up to school and get a basic level of education. They may or may not care about that if you're going into it as an older student. I'd ask before wasting time.

Getting it from college in your twenties isn't the same thing, its also a lot easier. School would be a breeze with an extra 10 years experience and knowledge.

Also they look for English Language so they know that you can string a sentence together and can communicate in writing competently enough.

If you feel you could pass it now without anymore lessons, you could always ask a local college if they'll let you pay to sit it in November.

Just ask a college to do a night course. Its easy and costs nothing to do. You should look into key skills english too its 'easier' than gcse and is regarded as the same grade

Lol just do a level 2? Its the equivalent and what the apprenticship would require regardless as part of your due. to you being left school 5 years plus - and its a walk in test? Test the city or something

Are you certain you need it to start the apprenticeship?

Admittedly it was sometime ago now but when I did mine the people who hadn't got a good enough GCSE just had to do something alongside their apprenticeship, key skills rings a bell.
