Got a 2004 ford focus mk3 1.6 TDCI
The turbo went last weekend and the car did the runaway diesel thing but fortunately I managed to cut the engine out.
Took it to a local garage and they arranged for the turbo to be replaced at a cost of around £800 which I thought seemed ok
Turbo has been replaced but the car is running like a bag of shit so they want to strip the block down and see what the issue is which is more cost
Where so I stand with the garage? If I don't want to throw more than the £800 at it, could I tell the garage to scrap it etc
The garage have said i would need to pay the £800 for the turbo etc regardless they have sorted the problem.
Car is still at the garage and hasn't left there yet since.
The car is worth probably 2k max id have thought to resell once sorted so I don't want to throw too much at it

£800 seems very steep for a Focus Turbo, our MK5 Golf TDI ate its impellor and shat the turbo and that was £700 to replace, including stripping down the engine to remove all the oil and impellor residue left behind at a VW specialist.
if you dont fix it whats it worth? £500 maybe? its a tough call really and in your situation i dont know what i would do you could pay the garage and take the car as it is and try and sell it as spares or repair but you might struggle with it.

If the garage haven't sorted the issue would you still pay the £800?
I want to tell them to keep the car and I will buy something else

its tricky because what did you "ask" them to do, investigate the fault? or just replace the turbo?
if the latter then they have done their job, maybe the engine is kippered, could be full of oil, could have popped a cylinder or something, its a real guessing game unless you can get inside it and see whats happening.
have you physically seen/heard the car running or are you just going off what they have told you?

Just going off what they have said.
I told them the breakdown guy who towed it there said the turbo has gone
To which they confirmed and quoted me the price of £650-750

The engine did suck up loads of oil from the turbo and pissed loads out the exhaust
So the engine could be filled with oil?
Won't they run off oil? So could be ok after a few miles?

the problem is a bit deeper than that, if the oils all in the intercooler and turbo pipework as soon as you start the car it sucks the oil up again and kaboom engine will go off like a bomb, thats the overrun you experienced when the turbo let go.
when the replaced the turbo did they drop the sump off and clean it all out? and replace the banjo bolts etc?
its basically a peugeot engine, and there are hundreds of threads on the turbo failure on this engine, some are saying its the injectors that are faulty and the seals leak, others say its poor servicing, wrong oil/filters etc that cause it.
if your car has a DPF in the exhaust its almost certainly full of oil too, so that will need to be dropped and cleaned out otherwise that will block up and again back pressure will kill the engine.
have you physically been to see the repairs they've done?heard the car running etc? a lot of the threads on this engine and the focus are pointing to the turbo not being the main fault, its just an "effect" of the injectors being iffy, if you start replacing those you're talking another £500+

Not been to or seen it yet, the cars half hour away by where we broke down.
They have cleaned out the inter cooler and exhaust pipes and dropped sump etc so I'm told
Could be possibly blocked injectors then?

injector seals are usually the cause of the problem, but again its not guaranteed to be that, the tips of the injectors could be trashed causing it to weap diesel rather than spray, thats what will be in your sump, a mixture of diesel and oil.
if you could get it to a running standard just drive it somewhere and trade it in, and least you'll get something £££ for it rather than a total loss.

Turbo fails and ingests the engine oil so with it being a diesel that will burn oil the engine continues to run on its own oil if not stopped in time will do so untill it seizes/explodes
Can be caused by other things Aswell but in this case the cause appears to have been turbo seals hence turbo replacement, overfilling with oil or engine breathing heavily due to worn rings etc will also cause it basically anything that will cause an oil mist to get into the bore , engine will burn the oil , revs will increase then due to the rev increase it'll draw in more oil mist from where ever it's getting in from then revs will go up more and more untill the point when you shut off the fuel supply and it continues to run on its own oil lol,

We build/built that engine in work. You's be suprised at the amount that get rejected and reworked due to faults.

I have breakdown cover that will always tow me home. One of the reasons behind this is so i can think over if i want to spend x amount of money on the car.
£800 on a 2k car i'd wouldn't want to spend. As soon as you have spent £800 on it, most often something else has worn and about to go. I would strip the car and scrap what is left over.
I'm not sure where you stand with the garage who has your car. I'd personally want my car back to strip BUT if i was the garage owner and have spent £500 on a Turbo that may sit on my shelf for another 2 years i wouldn't be best pleased.

You owe them for the work you asked them to do.

This is why i never ever use garages nowadays - they diagnose and change something - if its wrong they arent accountable

That bill needs paying, they've done the work.
Engine issues could be a load of other stuff. Could also be that its done something physical if its over-revved.

You'd have done better (financially anyway) to sell the car for spares/repair and buy something else..
Sadly the garage have done nothing wrong, there is a very good chance that the engine is royally fucked after a run-away..
You'll be throwing good money after bad if you have them strip the engine and no doubt end up spending more in labour costs than the car is worth.
Cut your loses and sell the sh*t.

Injectors are knackered so waiting on replacements to arrive and fingers crossed that sorts it.
In too deep now so needs sorting and then will sell it lol

Out of interest, how did you manage to cut the engine off?

Stick it in the highest gear and jump on the brakes would be my 1st attempt of shutting it down.
