Looking at these as a potential replacement for the Citroen when it goes back next year.
I know a lot of you will not be fans of these, as they are quite unloved! But I have always fancied one and the prices seem fair now for a low mile good spec 270 diesel.
Question is.. Anyone owned one? Didn't Davey have one? Or was it someone else..
Also if anyone owned any Merc with the 270 CDi lump your experiences are welcome. Merc techs at work talk of dodgy wobbly accelerator pedals and replacing ball joints. Aware they can eat injectors too.
Be looking at a facelift model 04-05

Auto boxes enjoy eating themselves and going into limp mode. Drive nice and aren't as juicy as a x5. Talk to DaveyLC he had one
Personally I'd prefer an x5

The auto box in the 3.0d x5 isn't much better also suffer from the air suspension in the back end dropping Aswell and the usual bmw shitty windows taking 2 seconds to go down and 2 weeks to come back up , the one iv got for towing car trailers up and down the country had never suffered with gearbox issues though and is a great tool...... Looks dated now though

Injectors are about £150 a pop.
EGR's coke up, as can the inlet manifold. All relatively simple stuff.

Worked on and driven a few of the V8 variants Jam.
They're no G-Wagon, but they're comfy and quite pleasant to drive.
They do like a bit of body rust though, like the crap, post-'96 E Classes.

I think the rust issues where possibly on the pre facelift? Not seen any examples of rust on the ones I am looking at (03-05) don't want an earlier one as they look pony.
V10 Toureg sounds expensive, and isn't a Merc.
Random Dav, care to be more specific? Where did you work and what was falling apart?

We do all Mercedes detailing work, and also a lot of Mercs through other ways. The interior trim feels brittle and shows, always bits breaking off, carpets wear easily, just a general shoddyness feel.

Seems utterly ridiculous to be saying that about, of all cars, Mercedes.
But it's true for lots of their cars. And they did it to themselves. Stupid, penny pinching bastards

430diesel you mean Pow?
They did! It's called the ML400 CDi. Not sure I would be arsed with one of those, rather the economy of the 270

That was the Chrysler era I believe. Allegedly the face lifted ML's are better, but still not as good as a new one (obviously)
I am tempted, but think I might need an aftermarket warranty with it to make sure it doesn't sting me as I know that costs of parts on these can be silly. Although servicing is entirely reasonable.
