in magazines etc.. i have read the focus RS is quicker most times, Type R has higher top end (obviously) and aparantly the RS handles better also. but is it worth the extra 4g ?

The Astra GSi beats them all for me, and is faster top end.

Maybe in the long run? i can see the civic depreciating quite a bit whilst the focus will hold its value much better.

My mates just bought the type R, its so nice to drive and quick. Between the two, RS are going to be less comman, as type R's are everywhere!
I'd have the focus as it RS turbo, but the Civic has all the kit and looks nice too, tough call!

Focus rs would be better imo and less common but it's a ford.
I'd have a the astra gsi turbo.

I'd go for the RS, I like Focus's and as said they are less common.

0-60's are very simular, but as the CTR lacks torque I should imagine that the in-gear times for the RS would be a lot better.

Actually the in gear times are VERY goods for the CTR. I've raced many 'faster' cars and not been shown up at all against M3's/M5's etc etc obviously over a certain speed their bigger engines will pull away. The astra gsi looks pants, focus is nice but steep for what you get. Civic handles spot on and is a fantastic car for the money. And someone saying it will depreciate badly = wrong. An article in the Times expects the Civic to hold its value really well over the next few years. I'd imagine the Focus to hold too but not the Astra.

Civic type-r 0-60 - 6.8 secs
Focus RS 0-60 - 4.9 secs
No comparison really. Handles better than a Subaru Impreza WRX, looks to die for, huge Brembo brakes, 18" OZ 5-spoke alloys. Nice interior. I know what i would have. Focus RS 1/4 mile time must be killer.

The Astra is Not competent enough to compete against these 2 cars IMHO.

Erm, I think you might want to check your stats there. The Focus RS does 0-60 in about 6...

Well at least The Stig drove it around the track faster than an impreza. G-Forces were incredible IIRC
