Hi,
I'm new to wireless networking. I want to connect my PC to my Dads PC and run the ADSL from his PC.
Has anyone done this? What do I need to buy?

two wireless cards, one in each, the one which is connected to the internet via the ADSL needs to run a program to route your requests to the internet, called a Proxy, windows 2000 and XP have its own 'internet connection sharing' stuff.
If you have no clue what you need to do or setup, ask a mate who knows what hes doing and ask him to set it up, better then getting all the gear and complaining on here

Righty, you'll need 2 wireless access points (plug in via USB or internal types) and a wireless ADSL router. The ADSL will plug straight into the router and both PC's will access it via the wireless access points. The router will also take care of the DHCP for your internal network if you want it to.
Netgear do some pretty good kits which contain all the kit required.

well i know how to do networking. Just never done wireless. I dont want to buy kit which i dont need

To be fair it is pretty straight forward. I've set this up a couple of times now and have never had too much trouble.
Forgot to ask though, what OS's are you running?

2 wireless pci cards or usb adapters... run in ad hoc mode... and then just share the connection as you would with a wired network.

if you have done networking with wire then you shouldnt have too much trouble...
IMO i think trotty is asking to buy too much kit, if you want to save money and already have a ADSL modem then you dont need all that wireless ADSL modem/switch bizz, you can just get away with two wireless cards...

Why not pay a little bit more and get a router instead?

ok dont run ICS, get some proper proxy software, OR EVEN BETTER, get another box dedicated to do the routing and run FreeBSD on it.
I'm thinking in geek mode, not sensiblesaveonelectrics mode. Depends what he wants eh.

So if i was to buy this:

if you want to go trotts route..
you need..
two wireless CARDS (or you can get the usb devices = gay!) for the two computers.
one Wireless Access Point/Router, pretty much what you describe above.

Well, if the PC running the ADSL at the moment has got an ethernet card you could plug that into the router, and you'd just need 1 access point for the other PC

Yeah, just beware to ensure the channels they operate on are the same and the SSID is the same on all wireless devices!

You would be better off finding a router with a built in modem, which is what i use, this way your dads PC wont have to be switched on for you to use the ADSL.
