have to say you talk shite. the car is ok so long as you uprate things when you up the boost. the brakes are too small for the power of the car. gearboxes only fail if they get abuse.

they drink petrol . lucky to get into the 20's with it.

I've heard the clutchs are quite weak, and as you say, brakes are too small for the speed of the car.

Anyone else got anything? Top speed etc. Bout 145mph isn't it?

I had a blast in one last week.

It felt awesome. Came off a round about exceedingly quick and it felt like it was shreading the tyres getting grip but apparently that was normal

Most people agree that a front mounted Intercool would be ideal but also the Gear linkages or box seem to go as the boast increase.

I used to have one @ 300bhp. It easily did an indicated 150mph+ with more to go. It was fecking quick off the mark too. Just under 5 seconds. 1/4 miles @ 12.8 secs

Things to watch out for:

i] Any whining nosies coming from Gearbox or any of the diffs - expensive repair bill - avoid

ii] If the car has had its boost rasied make sure that the clutch has been changed for a ceramic/kevlar type clutch. The standard one tends to go pop after about 260bhp with extended standing starts. The clutch is an engine out job (normally) and has a book time of 12 hours (labour prices will sting the most).

iii] Gearbox is also pretty bad once car boost has been raised but usually ok if you avoid doing standing starts all the time (but if you've got a Gtir thats what you always want to be doing!!!)

iv] Don't put wheels on any bigger than 17's. 15's or 16's are the best choice. Any bigger and it really puts strain on your diffs.

v] You'll find that most Gtirs front electric windows have difficulty in shutting - this is normal - don't let it put you off

vi] If you get a Pulsar (Jap) then try to get one that is still limited to 112mph. At least then you'll know its never been over that speed.

vii] The brakes are shocking as standard so you'll want to change these as soon as you get it.

viii] Try to use Optimax or at the very least super unleaded - don't use anything lower than 97 ron if you're high boosting.

viii] The intercooler is top mounted on the engine so after along time on the road the performance of the car does start to deterioate as the heat takes over. If you can afford a front mount it'll sort it (except you'll get slightly more lag).

viiii] Fuel Consumption is pretty bad especially with 300bhp. I used to get 200 miles to £40.

x] On standard internals don't raise boost higher than 20psi!!! Pref 15psi.

Pistons are fine up to 320bhp

I still miss mine but I had to sell it as a deposit towards a house. The guy that bought it though said I can have it back whenever I want as soon as I've bought the house.

They're really unknown to the normal Mr Astra Gsi bloke so you can really shock quite a few people. I debadged mine and boy did I have some fun!!!

They can be bought so cheap these days but as with any car like this if you can get one that is standard then all the better.
