The issue is that Microsoft have given them selves a hell of a lot of power to decide what happens with their console in the future.
And you better not step out of line:
Also, the fact that all these points in Russ' post needs explaining at all shows that they've done something completely wrong.
They spent several hours talking about the consoles media capabilities and left all the gamers with tons of unanswered questions that they never adressed properly.
All these mixed messages and "we haven't decided that yet" statements are a horrible sign.
It's not that there's nothing good about the Xbone, there's just so many strange little things regarding it that the PS4 becomes the "safe" option.

Can't see how that's a negative tbh. Everyone's always crying about cheatibg, etc. Makes sense to have harsher repercussions.

Summary?
you can play second hand games if you buy discs but not if you buy digital copies. You can lend a game to a friend but only one at a time can play that game like irl.
And this..
code: RENTING GAMES "Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."
So they're saying "oh wait, no you can use used games...please don't not consider our overpriced console...but not when we first launch". That's what I'm getting...
aka: 'we've fucked up, we had better make used games work quickly..' unless I've misread.
you did

That was in reference to the 360, apparently...

quote: "An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.
In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console — there will be no regional restrictions."

That's pretty cool how they've listened to the feedback.
Then, if the initial pre-order numbers would have held true PS4 would outsell XBone 3 to 2, so they had to do something.
Difference in the two consoles is more or less all down to games now.
