Not a good update im afraid

We got the car up and running this afternoon. After leaving it to idle for a couple of minutes I noticed oil pooring out the side of the rocker cover behind the coilpack Switched it off straight away and then found the exact same had happened on the cambelt side too. Oil has got absolutely everywhere! In a blind panic to move the car back to see how much oil had come out underneath I smashed the car into the lawnmower and scratch the shit out of my boot. Luckily its all polished out thank god!

I straight away started stripping the engine down to see what the hell has gone wrong. I pulled the HT leads out and the spark plug holes were literally filled with oil! Just spend an hour pumping it all out.

So me and my dad are now trying to work out whats happened to it. One thing we were thinking was that I used gasket sealant on the rocker cover gasket. My dad wasnt there when I did this and he thinks it was a bad move to make and that I could have not sealed properly. However considering how much oil was in the spark plug well and that it was only running for 2 minutes or so I'm not so sure? If the cover didnt seal right could this cause this to happen? I didn't take any photos but trust me the spark plug well was brimmed!

This is the sealant I used -

Other thoughts that have crossed our mind is that the head is knackered causing too much pressure?

So dissapointed I'm just praying its something simple like the gasket not sealing right but im not sure. Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like the rocker gasket mate, If I were you i'd get one for it rather than using that gasket sealant shite.

So are your cylinders filled with oil or do you mean the bit that the sprakplugs sit down in?

Im hoping it doesnt come to that Kev Bloody cars eh....stresssssss lol

Spoke to my dad again just about it while we had our tea and I think the gasket is looking like the cause. When I was fitting it I was having trouble keeping the gaskets in place on the rocker cover. So I quickly slammed it down to stop them falling out so it could well have not been seated right. The plan for tomorrow clean the last bit of oil out of the spark plug holes, remove the plugs and clean them up, order a new pair of gaskets from Autovaux and then set about cleaning the whole engine bay top to bottom.

Daz, I used a brand new pair of gaskets mate, I just gave them a bead of sealant to try and make sure it didn't leak a bit Ending up with it pouring out though lol. The spark plugs and still in so the cylinders are ok luckily. Just the spark plug holes and well thing in the middle of the head that filled up. I just need to get the last bit out of them before I take them out so It doesnt all go down into the cylinders

either use a gasket or the sealant but never both. the idea of the gasket is to conform the shape of both surfaces to prevent leaks. if you put sealent on it messes that up

p.s. nice motor.

white car = dedication = reason i'll never buy one

Ah I'd definately go for gasket then, just use the gasket next time

If it's that at least it isn't realy a problem! Best bit is that you know it runs just has a slight oil leak

i know.. it sounds daft. applying sealant to something should make something leak less, but someone has had to engineer that seal so it works as it should in the conditions it was intended to work. if you apply sealant you change those conditions and change its efficiency to work as intended..

I use spray adhesive to help the cam cover gasket stay in place. Once its in place I always put it gasket side down on a clean surface for a minute or so to let it dry in place before fitting it they can be a pig sometimes.

Cheers Sean I'll give that a try mate

Got up this morning and straight away got on the phone to Autovaux and ordered a new rocker cover gasket set. I've just sucked out the last of the oil in the spark plug holes, removed the plugs and cleaned them up ready to be refitted in a minute.

Next job is to clean the left over gasket sealant off so I've got a nice clean surface for the new gaskets to mate to. Then I'll be going proper OCD style cleaning the whole engine bay from head to toe
