Drunk on stats.
The stats don't lie but neither does common sense. Downing isn't worth £20 million and never will be despite possessing a good left peg.

That transfer spend is ridiculous considering half of that is on 'potential'.

hardly anyone has been good value this window. Was always gonna happen with the fair play garbage coming soon
Downing is not worth 20m. But he's a player liverpool have needed for years, they've not had a winger since McManaman really.
Winder if Villa will spend any money now they've made 35m on a couple of players

According to stats Baines is better than Clichy, and we all know that is impossible.

Andy Carroll priced the same as Sneijder. Utter joke.
Carroll will be in jail before the end of the new season too.

I'm happy we've got Downing, the money is a bit silly but we've needed a player like this for a while and i'm just happy we have another option available to us.
I agree with whoever said that CL is a 'must' for us this season. If we want to continue to build our team for the next few years then we need the revenue from CL to help with FFP. I think our strategy, like Arsenal's, really hinges on FFP being successful (which is why Henry has agreed with what Wenger has said about City) and we consider (lower) wages paramount in terms of getting value for money which is why we are less bothered about spending 'big' on the kind of transfers we've done so far and also why converseley we probably won't be signing any/many massive names this summer or in the future.
I think we'll continue to try and get the players we don't need out of the door and therefore off the wage bill and replaced by better players, some of whom may be on lesser contracts (specifically if they are 'up and coming youth' types, as our previous owners threw money at players like Cole etc). FPP isn't just about how much you spend on transfers, it's all about the player amortization and we look to be banking on the amortization of these deals being less over a longer period and getting the CL money.
I think this strategy is slightly risky but we needed a better squad to be able to compete for that top 4 and our owners will benefit from us getting better so it's almost a no brainer when you consider the number of areas we needed to improve (and still need to improve) on the pitch. We have spent £45m odd (net) since the owners came in so far, I think we'll carry on spending a bit now (LB, CB) and as I say we'll look to move on alot of players (at least 5 permananently and probably another 5 on loan deals).

You mention the wage bill but these players that you have spent a fortune buying arent going to agree to 30-50k contracts, they will be on big contracts as well as the big fees paid for them.
FFP also counts on revenue and i'm not sure what liverpool are making but 50million net on players with no european football must be a risk as well.

Players like Henderson and Adam won't be on massive contracts, they will be bigger than their respective clubs but nowhere near our top earners. MWG specifically mentioned he'd rather have Sneijder for £35m than Carroll (bit of a pointless post) but if you consider Carroll will be on even £80k p/week compared to the rumoured £180k p/week for Sneijder, over a 5 contract that amounts to difference of around £25m. It's all subjective at the moment, and we won't be able to properely consider the VFM of each player until you see what they have brought to their respective teams over their contracts.
It's funny that you mention revenue, we may end up spending (net) of around £70m on transfers this season, if you buy Sneijder you have spent what £85m already? Yes you have more revenue from matchday, and CL but you also have to service massive debts every season too. As long as we can prove that we aren't breaking FFP rules and if we get into Europe we'll be ok. It is a risk to get younger players in for big money but it could work out very well in our favour if we get back into the CL for the above reasons. You have just spent £18m odd on Jones so Fergie's obviously willing to take that risk himself if the player is right.

The Sneijder contract thing will be similar to the rooney one, there is no chance rooney is on £250k a week from the club, will be a similar situation with Sneijder if we sign him (i doubt it) and image rights will make up the amount.
£70 million on transfers for liverpool with substantially less revenue is a big risk, the reason blubs are going mental this summer is because the transfer fees aren't counted for this year, just the wages.
Which isn't as bad for both Liverpool and United, but you have to remember united has/had over £100 million cash sitting in the accounts from transfers, and the debt was not serviced by that money
