The problem with the cutting out does sound like the EGR/ICV is choked up.Quite a common problem on the 1400/1600.Probably just needs cleaned out.
Who fixed the H/G for you Will??Vauxhall?Thats a hefty price for not a big job.

well went a got my car from where it broke down, was able to drive
filled it up with petrol as it was low
driving back to the garage was ok
EML was still on
the garage plugged the diagnostic in and it came p with egr valve I think
he kept reving the car and it runs ok now
strange
im going to drive it around today and see how it goes

As its not stuck anymore.
