getting back on topic, allegedly, twitter smashed all its previous records, recording around 10,000 tweets per second discussing his death.
I've been trying to find online stats/graphs showing this, but not been able to find anything.

First, he was a man with a very impressive marketing ability and had acheived more by the time he was 25 than most of us will in our life time so its truly a great loss.

it could be quite easily said that eventually someone else would have brought out all of these products, but the apple product has always set the benchmark

Really

I'm 22 -

the first mp3 player i remember was an MPman 32mb that i managed to cram about 40 songs onto at a dire bitrate
the first smartphone i remember is the sony p800
the first tablet i remember is the palm pilot

In my opinion, the reason for apple's undeniable success over the last few years is simply down to very intelligent marketing, telling consumers what they want rather than asking them. They evolved on pre-existing technology and set the market up in a way that the release would be warmly accepted. In the late 90's companies were releasing products similar (however somewhat more clunky) to the ipad, however there simply was no market for it at the time.

As technology has improved, apple, along with other companies, have been able to improve the products, and once the marketing ball was rolling, have been able to systematically release their products when the market was ready.

People saying that he was a revolutionary to the technology industry are simply uneducated, what he did do was manage to convince people that they needed these products which other companies had not been able to do.

To those saying that without him the products wouldn't have been released is laughable, you do not know what would and wouldn't have come, whether another company would have filled their place and we would now all be using an archos or zen, purchasing music via napster etc. No doubt we would still be using phones, but the market place could have become different, and the requirement of facebook on the phone may have been laughable. There is nothing to say that without apple there would have been a detrimental effect upon the techonology age that we have been through.

"The NeXT Computer was considered a very high-end machine in its day and sold for $6,500. Tim Berners-Lee used the NeXT in 1991 to create the first web browser and web server. The original Wolfenstein and Doom were also created using the NeXT."

i can look at a cassette tape and know what way to put it in cassette player so your playing the correct side from the beginning, rather than the end of the wrong side.

i bet not many youngsters could do that nowadays
