Mine were a grand and they're crap.

Mine were £2700 and I think they are lacking in areas

my take on haldex (driven an R32 Golf)

Understeers like a pig in the dry when pushing on

a bit twitchy in snow (low profile summer tyres) when floored - sends a bit of power to the rear.

You hear a lot of folk bemoaning haldex on track cars. Understeer!

HALDEX seems to work the opposite way of Nissan's ATTESA. i.e 100% FWD till slip detected, then allowing upto 60/40 or 70/30 F/R or something.

Nissans system is 100% RWD till slip is detected (ON STRAIGHTS) then transfers upto 50/50 F/R

Having 4 driven wheels with power available is always going to be better if the front are just spinning! but having suitable tyres for the condition is always going to help FWD/RWD/4WD

PS - Haldex is not 4WD, its AWD isnt it? or is it the other way around

It won't be buddy. I was worried when I bought the golf that the fuel consumption would be bad but was pleasently surprised it was better than my last 2 cars lol.

On a long run you can see 35+mpg easily and when caining it drops to the low 20's which is still bloody good for a 3.2V6.

I think we need a bit of perspective here.

I dont think people buy the TT for all out performance, amazing handling or to take it on a track etc. If you want that theres plenty other cars you can get now for the same money, elise, s2k etc etc

I bought mine as it was a good all rounder. Quick, looked good, not bad on isurance, lots of toys, comfortable etc etc. i didnt even know what Haldex was till about a year ago (had mine for 3 years)

I also didnt buy it thinking about driving in snow (although that was a Brucey Bonus when it did come)

The main problem with the TT is that there too much weight is over the front wheels and they put the engine so far forward it understeers horribly when damp.

If I really cared though I'd get the haldex controlled to send 70% of the power to the rear but alas. I dont.

A 4wd TT will be far far better than a Puma in the snow if they are both on summer tyres. I live on a fairly steep side street and the only cars that can get up it in the snow (out of the people who live on it) are my S3 and a Hilux belonging to a lad that lives across. My Connect couldn't even get off the side of the road, I had to reverse it down to the bottom, likewise with my girlfriends sister's Corsa D. She got part way up and parked then couldn't get it out or reverse out so I pulled it out with the S3.

Back on-topic however I'd say best bet if you can is to test drive a few and have a read up on the specific forums, you'll get much more insight into potential problems and strengths/weaknesses of each model than you will listening to morons on here with an axe to grind. Top and bottom of it is though if you get a TT you'll have a well built, reliable good looking car with adequate performance that will still get you around if we have snow again this winter. In my opinion.

Well said mate. I dragged my mates transit out in mine in reverse

Buy an MR2 imo. Just a 2.0 GT non turbo, UK car for cheaper insurance.

You should consider an MR2.

Its quite practical if you don't have kids. Or a dog.
