Sorry, I meant the actual drone itself.
Parrot AR Drone is an off the shelf product they've been around for a couple of years or so now and there are LOADS of modifications available and pleanty of forums that will tell you how to upgrade your AR so you can fly RC, increase the battery capacity etc. etc.
You can also go for a quad/hex or octo copter kit and flight controller systems vary in price from KK boards which are a few quid up to £1000 for a professional DJI Wookong flight controller.
DJI also do a off the shelf ready to fly quad kit called The Phantom which uses the Naza-M flight controller (probably the best hobby grade controller on the market) and has a mount for a GoPro.
http://www.buildyourowndrone.co.uk/DJI-Phantom-QuadCopter-Ready-To-Fly-p/dji-phantom-rtf.htm
Its about £450 ready to fly.

Is the video feed over wi-fi? So when out of range you are flying blind?

On the AR the video feed and control are over WIFI and the range (as standard) is pretty ropey.
There are boosters available but if you go out of range it will just fly-away.
Alot of people upgrade to 2.4ghz RC and fit an analogue video transmitter, 5.8Ghz woudl be a good choice and at 200mW with decent circular polarized antennas will give a reasonable range (1km or so).

I shat myself yesterday was having a pretty good flight around my street then the drone stopped responding and just hovered a meter off the ground, looked down battery had gone on my phone so scrambled over to it and had to disconnect its battery (which if the props catch you or hurts like a bitch) I'd have thought it would have just landed! But in future going to check my phone battery first lol

You think thats bad, my 450 auto-landed on some rough terain, flipped and then proceeded to try and right its self, I had to pick it up and disconnect the battery with four 10" rotors trying to cut my fintgers off!

I just came into this thread to re-post that Monte Carlo video.
Pretty awesome stuff, amazing how stable these things are whilst panning and moving.... could be big for sports broadcasting in general.

It's another one of these things that's been quite big for ages. It's now cheap and accessible enough for normal people to buy them so its in the news more often.

A lot of the more expensive camera platforms are gyro stabilised so are as you say, very stable.
Has to be said they open up a lot of possibilities for some very cool camera angles in places you wouldn't normally get them. Like out on rally stages where setting up a massive panning camera rig isn't really doable.

I just tried mine out today
It gives 1080 @30fps or 720 @60fps plus it has a standard composite video out for FPV
