Alonso
Kimi gone a bit quiet, wonder how long he can stay out front on those tyres! Strange strategies going on here from everyone.

Alonso impressing, just what Kimi does stop wise after this one!

Great drive by Kimi. That Lotus really could be a championship winning car when it looks after its tyres like that

Thats got to one of the first times Vettel has led the first few laps and not gone on to dominate. Good to see.

Good race, impressive from Kimi.
My call last night on RBR tyre usage may have come into play, both RBR cars were relatively nowhere on the stints.
Merc wasn't too bad on rubber, which is a good sign after 2012 but their early pace was weak.

I think they dragged out that first stint too long. Lewis lost loads of time whilst everyone else changed. I can only imagine they planned a 2 but aborted it to rescue 5th.
Saying that, even if they had called him in with the others 5th was probably the best they had today, possibly 4th at a push.
And aye, RBR race pace was pretty shocking compared to Ferrari and Lotus (well Kimi, Grosjean was awful). Lets hope that continues.

Still, could be worse. Could be a McLaren driver.

I think Lewis could have finished a 2stopper and ended in the same position, however rather than controlling Webber at the end he would have been defending on braking etc.
Once Vettel overtook Hamilton on track, and Hamilton had >24sec over the Torro Rosso behind him - the sensible choice was to switch to 3stop just to make sure the end of the race was a cruise. Pace in the first stint ruined the 2stop for Merc, not tyre wear.
Considering Merc went longer on the first stints, and considering they were quite slow at the start - my amrchair diagnostics suggest the Merc isn't getting heat into the tyres quick enough. Aus was uncharacteristically cold this weekend, particularly slower than the other fly-aways which are due... so maybe ambient temps will come to Merc - and punish RBR further
/optimism
Ferrari are looking dangerous, Massa had the measure of Alonso IMO this race but once again the prancing cunts worked that out with strategy.

Id agree with that but that doesnt explain Rosbergs pace in the wet/damp conditions (where its even harder to get heat into tyres) or Lewis hooking up a quick lap in cold conditions, quicker than Ferrari/Lotus, who both had the pace on Merc at the start.

Good point, I really can't explain Rosberg in the wet - he was just in another league.
I know wet/dry setups don't really exist anymore, but maybe Rosberg had everything in max wet mode - hence his relative drop-off when they went to slicks in Q3.

Possibly! Be a bit of a risk like if he went for that.
Malaysia should give us more definitive answers

Yeah I noticed they were nowhere in speedtraps in FP too. Maybe they've just gone an RBR approach and settled with a draggy car, it'll fix their tyre issues of 2012 if they just go for cheap downforce (and hence drag) which may be enough to get some results this year.

I had a winner really. Only had a race day tickets for Melbourne but ended up watching quali 2 and 3 for free, plus me, my mate and his son wound up with free grandstand tickets for turn 1!

Possibly, but remember last year they did have their stallable front wing as well, so that might make a bit of a difference. Wouldn't have thought that on its own would cause them to be at the bottom of the charts, though.

Raikkonen, Vettel, and Massa all within a tenth of each other in FP2. Who to choose for pole...

There should be some during quali so that could mix things up
