Thanks all!

Was my intention to spend today checking the valve clearances, ended up going for a lovely meal this afternoon so only started at 5.

I did this lot & decided they were so far out of spec I was going to leave this job to a pro. They are meant to be 0.25, so I'm shocked to get one that a 0.52 feeler gauge fits in! If I had more time I'd have done it myself but I have a list of jobs to do & 4 days to do them in so I haven't got time to start ordering & waiting for shims!

Will give BMSport & ETA Motorsport a ring tomorrow to get a quote & who can do it sooner.

I can secretly hope so. If they are that far out I'd have thought it must make a difference

1495kgs. Still a beefy fucker. 1549 standard weight with no opinions, mine has sat nav, harmon Kardon, 6 cd changer etc so would weigh more than that. Not a bad little saving considering the cage is probably 40kgs and the car is still pretty 'normal' in relation to a completely stripped out track car.

can't be dealing with lb's 1492 kg's is still good going, that'd be like losing an average sized passenger from the car.

Same Ben probably noticeable if you were to drive it with the weight then without it straight away I guess.

Yeah it is Fad. These engines are tappy, mines really tappy Martyn who did my car today said he had another M3 in and it sounded silent compared to mine. Getting it done after Ring for sure

I'd be surprised considering it was done at Thorney, but you never know I suppose!? It's getting done as soon as I get back from Ring, which I am now packed & in bed ready for the early start, can't wait!

Got a lap in last night as it was sunny & pretty empty, was just a warm up lap mostly, gained pace at the end once the tyres felt better to try the setup. Seems good, I thought it felt a bit understeery at points but it could be because I wasn't putting enough heat in the tyres. Still managed a 9:21 timing off the video, felt slow to me so I was surprised at under a 10 minute
Wish I was on track tyres though. But I love this car

Raining now though :-(

Well got a very good update from an awesome time at Ring with a bad one at the end :-(

Left for Ring last Friday

Arrived at the tail end of 'car friday' and was quite quiet so we got a lap in. Nothing's changed except for the sheer amount of oil spill signs!!

Saturday morning we were greeted by this lovely weather

Decided to do a wet lap to see if it was as bad as people say...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOnkrFHOpxI&list=UUsLLrZb0lf-18JTdv5AvTvw&index=3&feature=plcp

It is. Fair play to people who can do a fast lap in the wet!

Sunday was better, I did 7 laps including a few passenger laps and it was pretty quiet. Set a personal best of 8:23, I love this car. Plenty of places for improvement but I'm happy with that. I did receive some instruction but I never did another 'fast' lap due to weather/traffic

8min23:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkX0Qi5k8Gs&list=UUsLLrZb0lf-18JTdv5AvTvw&index=2&feature=plcp

This lap shows the problem IMO with just letting people out on 'track' without proper instruction or briefings. The guy was absolutely clueless to anything going on around him and was a danger to himself

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m9w8QZ4PmM&list=UUsLLrZb0lf-18JTdv5AvTvw&index=1&feature=plcp

Got a few good pictures:

Love this one

Monday was horrible weather again :-( so just went to a couple of viewing points and did the Ring karting, which I won :-)

Then on Tuesday I did 3 more laps remaining on my Ring card, a mate wanted me to show him some smoother lines so I said I'd take him out in mine so he can just watch and get a rough idea, I did tell him I'm no pro but as it was his first time he said it'd be better than he was doing at present!
So I bought 1 lap, and lasted until the straight looking at the halfway point where I shifted from 2nd to 3rd and the whole engine tone changed and the car lost power, came off at Adenau luckily and car was misfiring and running like crap. Decided to nurse it home on back roads but it wouldn't do more than 20mph and I decided to stop as I didn't want to cause anymore damage. Got towed home

Checked plugs, thought I'd found the problem

Went to an auto centre in Adenau and they were very helpful and got 6 new ones next day at 12, fitted them, still misfiring, well I was hoping it would only be the plugs but now we thought it might just need the fault clearing off the ECU.
Scouted around for somebody to read the ECU to see what fault codes I had, surprised me that RSR didn't have one?? Went backup the autocentre that sold the plugs & they said they'd do it. So towed back down again, had 8 codes, cleared them and was still misfiring. Light came back on, 3 codes, Cylinder 1 & 2, and firing in wrong order. Compression test was done, 120psi across 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 0psi on 2 :-(

So it was worse than we thought, towed back home, poor old Mark on his Polo!

Called the RAC, organised recovery for 8:30am, and a courtesy car for 9am

See you in a few weeks....

Courtesy car, left hookers are weird!! Heated steering wheel....? Strange thing to have, but quite nice!

Problem now was everyone was following me home as I had the sat nav, so how do you make a normal looking German car stick out??

Still despite everything it was a awesome week, the most frustrating part now is waiting for the car as it can take 14-15working days. They asked if I'd authorise repair over there but I said no as I want it done by a specialist over here, plus they could just make damage up for all I know??

Joys of cars eh, I should take up Golf....

14-15 working days would hate to leave my car with random people for that long.

gutting for you that the problem happened after you decided to take your mate out for a bit of tuition. i bet he feels partly guilty. i know i would.

Yeah Ben it would have happened either way at some point so I'd rather it then than when driving home & then needing to wait for recovery etc

Thanks John, it can be fun having both, you don't get that anywhere else, but when the biker is clueless it's dangerous. The thing that frustrate me most is the fact I ride bikes aswell and it's all about looking out for yourself but he just doesn't

In capable hands the bike would probably corner the same if not better, as it was my exit speed on the corners meant it would have been impossible for him to keep up. This is shown mostly by the speed the Swifts can go round in, low power but lap such good times

Looks good going round the ring

Could it have been the valve clearances that caused the problem?

Thanks Fro

I was told they won't be a problem, but until I've got it apart and I know the damage, it's all speculation. It's only been a day without the car and I'm already itching to have it back home and get it stripped down so I know what I'm dealing with. Both in terms of the scale of the job & the time it'll take, and the amount of cost involved. Until then I need to get some money making going on
