They've got 100kg to last a race. They can carry more, but if they use over the 100kg it's DQ.

So if you carry 105kg for example you can be sure to finish the in lap and have enough for the sample, but an FIA flow meter will measure how much you use lights to flag.

Pretty sure I heard you have to complete your in lap too, no more stopping at the side of the track after the race to make sure you have your sample

Don't be soft

They cannot walk away mid season, the wrath of Bernie is far more dangerous than a year of bad performance.

If they bow out after 2014... oh look, there's Honda.

Renault have invested bajillions on this engine, they will make it work. Maybe not by Australia or even by the end of the season - but it will work and it'll be strong.

Renault have been the most successful manufacturer in the last 10 years so they've got the skills and resources. I wonder if they've suffered with not really having a proper "works" team. I know RBR are the works Renault team by name, but it's clear that Newey and his team have poorly coordinated with the Renault engineers.

Further to this, Cosworth are now rumoured to be back for 2015. That makes sense really, as they did much of the dev work for 2014 then simply couldn't find a team. If they've got most of the legwork done, and now some interested parties (ex Renault teams maybe? ) then we could see them back again.

Thought this was quite an interesting graph from the test just gone. Rosberg's race sim shows how consistent he was lapping, suggests he wasnt struggling with tyre deg and his lap times were faster than that of the Ferrari and Mclaren (obvs dont know the fuel loads of the Mclaren and Ferrari but i assume Merc were running it in full 100kgs race spec)

JA analysis

quote:
This is exactly the kind of lap graph that F1 teams and engineers study as it shows patterns of performance. Dots that sit low in the graph, indicate a faster lap time, whereas ones higher up indicate a slower lap.

In this case what you are looking for are groupings of laps together, particularly on longer runs if the dots stay relatively consistent and don’t rise up as you look to the right. This is an indicator of pace and that the car is looking after its tyres well and is not suffering particularly bad degradation. You can clearly see this with Rosberg’s penultimate run where the lap times are relatively flat, rather than sloping steeply upwards.

JA on F1 Technical adviser Mark Gillan, former chief operations engineer at Williams, prepared the graph and he comments: “Clearly we do not know what fuel levels were being used by all the teams, but Mercedes must be very happy with this test. Rosberg’s graph shows the clear pace of Mercedes over both the short and longer runs, with their tyre degradation being good, especially on the penultimate run.

Similarly McLaren and Ferrari have clearly done a good job with their new cars, but appear to have a bit to do to catch Merc’s general pace.

Seems a bit same old story today so far. Merc engined cars going well. Ferrari, meh. Renault not good at all.

Caterham have hardly been out since they stopped in the morning. Lotus have packed up for the day and Red Bull had a decent start but havent been seen since lunch, apparently still struggling with cooling/ER issues. Still havent managed more than 12 laps in one run.

Is the red bull stuff all for show? Are they really that far behind or will they suddenly come out on race day 1 with a fully functioning car?

Redbull sandbagging tbh

Far too much marketing at stake to fanny around to this level. Infiniti/Renaults' marketing departments will be going through hell at the moment.

I can't hel but think they will turn up at the first race and demolish the other teams.

That's probably due to 4 years of borefestness.

Heard some interesting news today from RB.

Looks like they are making a new chassis to try and solve some problems. They really are struggling but they have a lot of resources. Seems like they are really in the shit!

Also shows how much money they have, as I'm sure your aware they have a bladder bag for the drinking system in the car. Redbull have just put in a order for 8 for ever race meet so they don't have to drink out of them more than once. That is over £60k for the season just on the drink bag system. Can't remember the exact wording that was put but along the lines of "our drivers are to precious to us to be drinking out the same bags" Crazy!

So hard to do a "B spec" this year, it's not like they can just bolt the new rule aero on a 2013 chassis. The engine mounting and stuff is completely different.

I reckon we should expect a B spec at Barca.

Seems they've just given up on long runs and are just doing short ones to stop it breaking.

Mixed day for Merc today, early stoppage for Lewis, then smashed in a fair few laps but had to end early with a gearbox issue. Mclaren spent a fair few hours fixing theirs too. Another good day for Force India and the Ferrari has looked reliable today

Doubt it no such thing as bad publicity really. The fact they are not performing means they are getting more airtime and pics then any other team so pushes there advertising up

I agree long term they won't want bad performance but short term it keeps the brands high in terms of air time

Williams have just done a few quali style runs. 1.34.4 and 1.34.8 (not sure which tyre yet). Still over a second off what Rosberg achieved on the Softs at last weeks test.

Agree Cole, would be nice to see them back up there. Not too up there though, just behind the Merc would be nice
