If you were involved in them then I'd suggest you should have thought more at the time of the side effects of entering such an argument.

Don't forget such things can still be trashed. If a thread has missed administrative attention because it just fizzled away, there's no sense it staying there just because we didn't get it first time around.

Its potentially a useful feature and for that reason I like it. Bad threads can be dealt with and I'd rather they were than loose something nifty.

but but im always involved

i can see it putting alot of extra work on moderators when these old posts are brought back up

Work we should have done at the time?

If we trawl nearly 1 million posts and remove every single bad one are we not left with a better resource?

Thats a result in my book.

What are the overheads to the DB if every thread has it's "related threads" populated and does the related threads list ever get updated?

I've just clicked the top related thread, then the top of that and so on (until I got bored).. so have tables now been updated with this cross reference list?

Another question... what's the point? Most of the threads are crap anyway, so it just links crap to more crap.

I'd rather see a more powerful search engine

Stop worry about overhead on the DB, its all very efficient.

So far as crap, crap and more crap are concerned, perhaps but this is not a technical issue!

I've altered it a little so you aren't given links in to Off Day but you'll get them out of there from threads within.

Thats the page footer so I can't move that up just on one page.

I'll make it removable for those people not appreciating its power!

Closed stuff is OK to stay, if they wanted deleting they'd be deleted. Trashed stuff shouldn't be there and if you see any of these I'll remove them. Let me know.

Me no likey Ian. Dont mean to diss your hard work but I think MANY MANY will agree that this new style aint good. Its clogging everything up with old posts... Give it a month and C.S will be a right mess and people wont know where we are cos people (mainly newbies) will be replying to the old posts! Is their any chance it will be returning back to its old style?

I can certainly make them optional.

My question to you would be if someone is talking about pariticular subject, does the age of the thread matter? An XE conversion is always an XE conversion, no?

Have a look in Help Zone or ICE and consider if they're of no use at all. I completely agree they dig up old crap in GC and OD and for that reason I'll probably make them optional in these two places.

And you're not dissing my hard work, all input is good.

I would say that it wouldnt be very usefull in Help Zone, however it WOULD be usefull in ICE because the only people that seem to use ICE are those who havent a clue and need help. I still think the search method is best for people who want a general understanding of subjects... To be honest ICE is a very specialist section, which is not really Vauxhall or Corsa specific which is probably why it gets used the least. Most of the serious ICE heads on this board do tend to use the likes of Talk Audio or Sound Domain more, where they can communicate with other poeple who are as fanatical about it, thats probably why so many questions go unanswered in ICE. Maybe you should have a vote system at the top about the change, that way you will get a fair response....

Also I dunno but if their was some way of clearly labeling the related threads as OLD posts people wouldnt respond. One idea would be to put a large button at the bottom of the posts which said in bold writing something like "Search for more related posts" etc, people could then just give it a quick click and it could bring up a whole list of similar related topics? That way it would clean up the posts as they do look cluttered with the five related topics at the bottom

Consider the user who is yet to post but is reading threads that have caught their eye. Related threads should help them out here. I'm assuming of course that people read before they post, which I'm hoping many do. This is less applicable to people wanting a specific solution to something. Works with people reading things to learn about things in a more general way.

It may also be that on finding one post either through regular browsing or search they need posts similar to that one. It works well here also.

Old threads - Last Post? I know no one bothers looking at it but what can I do, pop up window or something?!!

Searching takes time. These are stored with the thread and not searched for specifically. This is a more effective use of server resources rather than 10 people all ask for related things and it have to go look 10 times.

My plan is to display them only in Help and ICE and see where we go from there.

Still think my BIG button at the bottom saying "MORE RELATED POSTS" is a good idea. It serves JUST the same purpose as at the minute except it cleans things up a lot more and people (the minority) would ONLY click it if they wanted to look at them, instead of us ALL having to see them

Agree

I do see your point though, ive been trying to think of a solution to the "can i fit 17's to my corsa B" questions poping up every week. Does anybody actually use the FAQ?

You suggesting something and it happening are not mutually exclusive

I do take feedback!
