The standard ecu uses the speed sensing to adjust the idle as you slow down.
So either bad earth/connection or sensor needs relacing.
Probably the sensor though.

Buy a sensor and change it urself.
It's just below the battery tray.
Will be cheaper to buy a haynes manual and a spanner set if you got quoted £30 for the diagnostic check!

Try a scrapp, you need the late gearbox mouned speed sensor as i think all sports had the non-cable speedo.
All instructions in the haynes.

i had this exact cutting out prob mate, was after i fitted digidash and wire from dash to ECU to tell the ECU speed of car wasnt connected, so i assume if your speedo doesnt work its going to cause the ECU not to get the speed and for the ICV not to function properly?
oops just read some replies above so i think u will get the idea.

Even if its a cable it'll still go to the same place.
I think its below the front of the battery tray, may just be below the secondary air injection pump or ABS area.

This is the general location of it... My finger is pointing to the sensor...
Close up... The sensor is the little thing with the brown and blue wires poking out the top of it.
I can e-mail these pics to you full size if ya like, if they are of any help...
