Yes, you will see the wave form, which will be a sine wave. And when you turn up the volume on your headunit (measuring it off the RCAs) the sine wave will get bigger, and when it distorts, the sine wave wont be as smooth (you will have bumps and ridges, peaks in the wave form).
Measuring from the RCAs will determine the max volume of your HU, so if it goes 0 - 35, then maybe at 31 it will be clear, 31, it will start to become a tad off, 32/33/34 peaks show and 35, the sine wave will have big peaks and will go outside the range etc.
But yea, once you have the done the RCAs and know what the max volume of the HU is before it distorts (lets say 31) then you plug in your amp (no speakers) and connect the scope to the speaker outputs and then turn the HU to its max volume (31) and then turn the gains up and down and do the same again
its fairly simple, but you just need to know how to use the scope...so you will need to read the manual etc
here are some links that will be useful:

yea, your science department might have one floating about Make sure it isnt ancient or anything, but if it can handle higher information rate (stated in MHz, usually 20,50,100) then the quicker information can be displayed plus they usually cause less capacitance when you probe stuff, so making it even more accurate.
However, have a butchers on the links i gave you and get abit clued up on what is what and what you will be doing, Its fairly simple, but its the scope and set that up that will take you alittle while (especially if you have never used one before etc)
But yea, still get a quote from your local ICE place or have a flick through the yellow pages and see what you come up with.

you dont really need to bollock about with scopes, just turn the gains down to min, run it for 2 weeks at say 20 out of 35 on hu.
Then gradually over next couple of weeks increase hu volume to 35.
Then you can up the gains on the amp to louder until just before it distorts.
I happily run my alpine on 35 (max is 35) all day, with no distortion at all, as i set it up that way.

so when i come to set it up after the 2 weeks, have it playing at 35 then put gains up till distortion, then back it off a little bit on the gains?
wont it be well loud when i'm right next to it, lol

So Langey u & Adi thought anymore bout this inventive ported box design.
Sounded pretty complicated on msn altho worth doing if it can b done well.
As for DB, if that RE sub is as good as Adi says (not for 1 minute doubtin ya mate, lol) then uve got to b lookin between 140 & 145 db.
More likely to b round the 145 figure ported rather than sealed tho

yeh you guys baffled me with talking about a sealed and ported box in one ! i was under the impression ported boxes are different volumes to sealed

set on the RE xxx 15"
hit a problem today tho got a pay rise, but nowere near what i was expecting so system will have to span over 3months rather than 2. but at least the 3 months includes a alarm.
i might fuck the alt,bat and cat off for the 1st month coz i wont be running the system loud, i'll just be "bedding" itin so no need for big power. so that will come later i think when i get paid the month later.
oh and yes the box design is complicated, still not decided.
i have it sorta planned in my head, and when i get the drawing done of it, i'll show adi and see what the boss says

Suppose as ya runnin it low for the beggining it shudnt matter as u said.
However dont quote me on that, Adi or Richie might come and tell us thats wrong and u need the alternator and battery in from the begining, lol

well if i dnt need all that in from the beginging, it will save money and mean i can get the actuall speakers before a month earlyer than planeed

You shud be ok to run it for a bit, the draw of the amps will be dependant on volume, just dont run it too loud too long, and turn it down if u get serious light dimmage!!!
