ur in the same boat as me son

19 (20 on thursday) 0 ncb, £8k to spend

im going for a seat ibiza cupra 20VT as they have great potential for tuning, a chip can give you upto 210bhp from a specialist (jabbasport/revo/oettinger/amd etc) and they have the best interior ever and on top of that theres the vw build quality

can be picked up now from around £7k

you could also get a mk1 clio 172 for the money

both are almost identical so really it's down to which one you prefer in terms of looks. I prefer the exterior and seats of my gti but the dash layout of my bro's VTS. In terms of performance, mine is now quicker than his with my decat top end but 0-60 are identical. Mine is a T reg 99 and his a 2000 W reg and both worth about the same.

I'll sell you a standard GTI in June. Deff a GTI over a VTS; the build quality and image is much better

Sat in a VTS today, not really keen on the build quality and pedals.
My Corsa feels like a tank in comparison!

Youll get used to the pedals, trust me. I wasnt too keen when i first went in my 106. Assuming the pedal layout is the same.
