the silver on black plates are only permitted on vehicle registered up to 1972. After that you have to use the yellow(rear) & whilte(front) ones. Also that applies to the vehicle, not the plate - I've got a personalised reg off a 1960 Norton motorbike, but I have to display it using the modern plates.
