i did a basic top end rebuild on mine before it went in. took a while but think it's a wise move.
i'd been driving the donor car for 6months prior with no problems, but i saw it that it's a whole lot easier to do the work with the engine out than it would be to do it in the tight corsa bay, in the even that the head gasket went after a month or whatever.
mine seems ok, few niggles need ironing out still, but it drives fine, hasn't let me down yet, and gives me a big grin.
