im looking into the same sort of tuning but this is the route i mite take as i need new stem seals soon:
1. get head ported and skimmed (possibly bigger valves too but not sure if there is much point if im only going to be running 150bhp after ive finished everything)
2. enlarged throttle body
3. full exhaust system inc. manifold.
and then after a bit of saving...
4. dbilas or lexmaul inlet manifold
5. re-mapable chip
does anyone know what sort of prices im looking at and can someone post up links to a company that sells them.
also does anyone know of a differant order i should do this in

im looking at throttlebodies on my gsi & aiming for 170-180bhp mark...
but will be about 2.5k mark easy... pistons, arp bolts, headwork, lifters, cams, tb's, exhaust manifold & system, management...

To run 150BHP from these 1.6 engines ya have to have TB's really if you try and get 150BHP from a 1.6 with the use of and afterarket inlet manifold you will be scratching for the odd BHP here and there to even get close, 138BHP is the best i have seen with an inlet maifold and head work etc.

Im taking mine to a RR in next few weeks to see what BHP its at then will take it back in about 50 years when i've had all the parts sorted ! As far as i'm aware its standard!

what would i need to get to produce 140bhp???

Brosters motor, is the best i have seen from a 1.6 with inlet, its rapid for what it is, goes right off the clock, me and him have raced when i had 132bhp and his top end was so much better than mine

ive not raced him in my gsi yet but he wants to race, says my car is a bit of a funny one as its doing things & sounding like something it shouldnt be...
only difference is his pulls past 6750rpm where my limit is but from what I could tell, being in both, they seem to pull the same, except his has the kick at about 3500-4000rpm when the cams come to life...

This is what I am thinking! Would like the extra power etc.....but insurance for an XE would be too much so like you said, would be happy with a 140bhp 1.6 for now! Once I finish my Corsa I won't be getting another one!

you'd have better chance insuring a 2ltr corsa than a highly/midly tuned 1.6i quoting 140bhp mark...

My old motor was funny, it was rapid off the mark cos of my rev limit and hitting over 60 in 2nd gear but top end it would max out, best i ever got was 128MPH where as Brosters would red line at his raised limit in 5th!!!!. All these 1.6 engines are weird they do strange things sometimes

62mph in second on my GSI was pulling over 7500rpm
Some 1.6's had an F15 gearbox some had a close ration F15 maybe this is why.

i've had an indicated 132mph on the speedo @ 6700rpm in mine, also worked it out against the ratios for the box & for the 6750limit, its 132.6mph on the wheels & tyres I was using, so nae bad!

i got a tuned 1.6 with 153bhp,
it was a pain in the arse tho.
specs:
pipercross air filter
mantzel inlet manifold
head work
piper fast road cams
double valve springs
uprated head gaskest
larger forged pistons
apr conrod bolts
lighten and balanced crank and flywheel
4 branch manifold
de-cat plus ashley exhaust
unichip and raised rev to 7800
cost about 4k and thats with very little labour cos family own a garage
want tb's but don't know if i can justify the money, reckon i'm losing a bit of power cos of the old pipercross filter - reckon a viper and decent cold air might get me 155bhp.

Thats sounds cool mate! I assume it cost 4k over a period of time and you didnt do it all at once?

yeah didn't do it all at once, would have been cheaper to tho.
did the cams, head and manztel and 4 branch at first.
doing this the car didn't feel that fast so went and got the unichip.
had 129bhp before the chip and 143bhp after.
the unichip totally transfromed it, smooth power and a real kick about 5500. but....
pistons couldn't handle it and fcuked all four of them within 3 hours of getting it setup
so thought fcuk it & got it bored out and did all the work to the bottom end to make it strong enough then got it setup again, and its been fine for about a 1 1/2years now.
been told if i go for tb's i should see about 180bhp

So would you recomend saving for everything and getting it all fitted at once then! Even if it does take a few months to save and accumulate all the parts?
