i think you are right. people talk about them being fashion symbols etc...but at the end of the day you will buy the best mp3 player within your budget.

that was old gen1/2 ipods, where the battery would only last so many months - its fixed now and you can get them replaced for free (in some circumstances), so its not all bad 
tbh, if you want something simiple to use, good build quality and lots of extra's (like alpines/pioneers interface) then i would go for an ipod. Otherwise if your after the gadgets, then get something like an iriver etc
as for sony sod that shite - why do they feel the need to add copyright stuff onto the mp3s so you can transfer them around? and why give you a piece of shite software which you are restricted to? (ipod you can get stuff for winamp etc etc), battery life may be 20hrs, but they seem to be a right pain in the butt to use properly.

The Sony's as Dom says are a pain to use, you have to convert into their software and I understand that the file is then copyrighted and cannot be transferred etc 
iTunes absolutely rules
