And you'll have the same problem that the Astra does now?

I'm not really going to pass judgement as I've not driven a Golf or CTR for that matter. I've driven loads of Astras and I know they're OK, and I'm sure the H is better than the G was, so I can't see the VXR being all that terrible. Obviously if you're dramatising for TV you keep it nailed through the bends but mine wouldn't even let me do that. TC would kick in well before you even break traction on the inside wheel and understeer is non-existant with ESP working, I can throw the wheel half a turn on a wet roundabout going far too fast and the car just sorts itself out. It would not sit understeering like that VXR did.
I'm sure 240bhp in a FWD chassis is too much but the main thing is, its quicker from the lights than the others. Its also a Vauxhall so they'll be 10995 in 12 months, which is when I'll be buying one.

Thing I found amusing is the telegraph driving suplement, (who clarkson writes for) usually runs quite parrallel with Top Gear reviews.
In that article in the paper it said the VXR was much better than the golf not only in speed but handling too.
Yet top gear slag it off? to be honest if it's not german on top gear it usually gets a slagging, they love their Mercs, BMW's, VW's and audis.

£10,995 for a 1 year old car with 240 bhp will be a bargain. Thinking about one of these in a couple of years when the insurance companies won't hang up on me

dont take what clarkson says as gospel, his opinion may be better than the average joe's but he'll be gettin backhanders all over the place, dont be fooled.
I've also noticed reading comments then generally people that own or have owned certain cars always stick up for them, fair enough but i dont think thats grounds for judging it over a car you've never driven. Based on looks, i'd personally choose the astra and thats an unbiased view.

"That said, had you given a front-drive car this much power and torque even 10 years ago the result would almost certainly have been undriveable, while the Astra simply requires a modicum of restraint to contain."

No, thats why I'm not taking it to 240bgp, it'll be able to handle 225bhp easy so I shall probly aim for that... besides the Golf handles much better than the Astra so probly would be able to take more... as for the ugly cvomment, I think your confused

I still reckon the astra would be quicker than a ctr round the track.

More like the R32 weighs as much as Afghanistan Same power IIRC
Was watching Top Gear again just now, seriously, that was awful on the track, completely missed one corner an off the track 5 times

You asked how the Astra was faster than the R32, I merely suggested a few reasons off the top of my head. Everyone knows a mega powerful engine in a FWD hatchback is a mere marketing exercise and not usable on the road, Vauxhall would never do such a thing
