that fact that they all pay £10 to begin with, then take £1 back..... so theyve paid £9 each.
9x3 = 27 + 2 for the tip = £29
Where the £1 gone ?

if they only had the 10 on them in the 1st place, and when they leave they will all have 1pound, so how can they have not paid 9pound each?
which means there should be 3quid left from the 30 they origanlly paid

so they pay £9 each = £27
and pay £2 tip
wheres the extra pound gone?
[Edited on 28-07-2005 by Jason2004]
wait a minute, the extra pound is still on the tip tray and the waiter has forgot to pic it up.
if they took a quid back each it would work out at 27 not 28, that would leave the waiter 3 quid.
"out of the £5 they all take £1 back(= £28) " that bit is wrote out wrong which makes it confusing.

3 people - each paid £10
3 x £10 = £30
Lunch was £25
£30 - £25 = £5 change
Each person takes £1 from the £5 change
£5 - £3 (£1 x 3) = £2
Waiter gets £2 tip
THERE IS NO EXTRA POUND!!!

no because they all put £10 on the table...
it cost £25 so they have £5 change to split between them.... they take a pound each and leave £2 for the waiter

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF YOU LOOK AT IT THIS WAY!!
THEY ALL PAID £10
EACH RECIEVED £1 BACK
THEREFORE MUST HAVE PAID £9 EACH!!!
COMING TO A TOTAL OF £27
WITH THE £2 TIP ITS ONLY £29

they all put 10 pound down making 30 quid in the pot, right!
30-3 because they all wanted a quid back because they have put to much in = 27 english pounds not 28! leaving 2 quid for the waiter,

The bill was 25 quid so if they all paid 9 quid that makes 27, 25 for the bill 2 for the waiter

ok
10£ each for the bill
bill is 25£
they take 1£ each back = £28
which leaves £2 for the waitress
