Saxo VTS's have a lot more presence on the road than 106 GTi. the 106's gti's are everywhere, vts's are quite rare.

vts's have lots of tuning potential, with a few tuning mods they can do similar 1/4 mile times....

Yeh very much the other way round. You sure you've not been seeing quicksilvers?

*though a lot of VTrs I think might be a VTs?*

But generally Saxo's are as common as muck (as are vts's), where as Gti's are still rarely rare and so still have some class. This is reflected in their prices, Saxo VTS can be had for a couple of grand, Gti's are more £3000-£3500 for cheap ones.

I havent drove a VTS yet, but I took a VTR out last Sunday. Its alot slower than the vts (and my gsi). I liked the gears, very close together, smooth. Pedals are too close together for me (size 11). Fun car, and handled well.
